Letter from the Head of School

Dear Marist Families:
What a glorious time of year for a school community!  This past week, our Softball team defeated St. Dom's, our baseball team defeated St. Anthony's in extra innings, our Dance team competed for the first time, our artwork is on display at the Bayonne Public Library as part of the Hudson County Teen Arts Competition, and the drama club performed a fantastic rendition of "Anything Goes" on the Marist Stage.  Not to mention our new archery club!  And the Academic Awards Banquet is around the corner!  I just love seeing our students grow, dream, and achieve!
To add to the fun, Marist will be hosting its first ever Marist Family Carnival.  We hope it will be an added money maker as well.  If you want to volunteer your time the weekend of June 2-6, or if you have a special skill such as facepainting etc. and would like to donate your services, let me know as soon as possible by notifying Mrs. Oberlander at [email protected]. Here's a list of available time slots. This is a great way to give back for those of you whose sons and daughters receive Marist Aid.
Be an early payer! Sign up next year by May 15. The forms were mailed. Send in your Student Data and facts verification forms along with the $250 now. After the 15th, the cost increases to $300. Remember, that scheduling is done in the order of registration. If you need copies of the forms, contact Ms. Depoalo at [email protected]. Questions about FACTs? E-mail Mrs. Ramos at [email protected]. Did you complete your application for Financial Aid yet?
The billing schematic will be just a little different next year.  You'll have eleven payments like this year, but the June payment will be for all of the fees.  In July, you'll begin the tuition portion of the bill.  It's so important that you are in FACTs before June so that all of the billing begins on time.  This prevents families from getting behind.
I sincerely want to thank each of you who have made every effort to stay on track with your payments this year.  By this time, all of you should be finished with 2015-2016 and ready to register in May and start the new cycle for 2016-2017.
Read further in this newsletter for details about end-of-year activities.  As you look ahead to summer, I strongly encourage you to keep your sons and daughters active in service opportunities, summer programs, on-line learning, and reading beyond the required reports. Contact your son's/daughter's counselor for ideas.
I want to offer my congratulations to the Class of 2016 who will be venturing onto higher ed.  They move ahead having earned more than $8,000,000 in grants and scholarships!  What an amazing testament to their hard work and the investment that their families have made in a Marist education!  May they continue to prosper with God's wind at their back!
Sincerely,
Ms. Alice J. Miesnik
Head of School

Campus Ministry News
The Resurrection of Jesus was observed joyfully on April 21st during our Mind, Body, Spirit Day with a simple liturgy.  Gospel Choir led us in song. Mr. Power led a reflection about the relationship between Easter, Mind Body Spirit Day and the renewal of our spirit going into the final weeks of school.  Our celebrant was Fr. Alfie from St. Henry's Parish.  We also concluded our preparation of the Marist Fourviere year and our re-commitment to Marist and the larger Marist community around the world.
Service Week:   Four of our Upperclassmen embarked on a Service Retreat to West Virginia to help the local community there that suffers from poverty. They spent the week building houses and handicap ramps, painting and many other jobs. They were enthusiastic participants and we are very grateful for their service to the larger Marist community!
Ascension Thursday, which is a holy day, is celebrated on May 5th this year. There is no school for students. Catholic students are reminded that they are obliged to attend Mass on Ascension Thursday. Faculty will meet for a full day of Professional Development and to look back on the many successes of the year!
Marist Youth Retreat, a leadership workshop for underclassmen from Marist schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other Latin American countries, will take place at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY during Memorial Day weekend. Twelve of our students have been nominated to attend. They will learn skills to become Marist Leaders in their respective grades.
Encounter Retreat: Many of our Upperclassmen have made an Encounter Retreat this year. We had over 275 students attend one of many different retreats this year and that number will continue to grow next year!
Taize Prayer Service:  Marist Bayonne also hosted a Taize Prayer Service (Taize is an ecumenical  monastery in France which attracts many young people.) We had over 100 people from the different local Marist schools join in prayer and good times. This was a time where they shared prayer, dinner and had time to reconnect with Esopus friends. Many of our Upperclassmen lead retreats and spent time developing their spiritual lives throughout this year and we thank them for their service!

Counseling News
May & June SAT's:  May 11th is the deadline to register for the June 4th SAT's.  We encourage the Junior class to take the June 4th test to get a start on the college process.  The best way to prepare is to practice, practice, practice.  Use the free resources at www.collegeboard.org  or reach out to your counselor for other tools.  If your son or daughter is taking the May 7th SAT, be sure they have their administrative ticket, School ID, several #2 pencils (traditional, not mechanical), and a calculator with them before they leave the house!
Guidance Tips for the Summer:  Summer is the perfect time to make strides in the college preparation process-no matter what year your son or daughter has completed.  Colleges are looking for consistency in extra-curricular and volunteer activities, so why not start now.  Encourage your young adult to join a sports league, work at a camp, or volunteer at the local library, church or recreation center.  And don't forget that summer reading!  Junior parents, summer is also a great time to visit those colleges that are farther from home.
Summer Programs:  Deadlines are coming up to register for Summer Programs. All counselors are working with students interested in applying to programs.  Some programs are competitive to get into and some have costs attached.  Let us know if you have one in mind for your student and need our assistance, or if you need help finding the right one for your student.
College Acceptance Statistics:
  • Total Number of Seniors:  85
  • Number of students who have been accepted by one or more colleges/universities to date:  56
  • Total amount of scholarship/awards, grants, financial aid offered so far:  $8,142,890
Please note, these numbers are contingent upon students' submitting their acceptance and reward letters to the Guidance Department.  If your Senior has not yet turned in their information, please have them do so ASAP.  We would like to publically congratulate them on the morning announcements for this great accomplishment!
