George R.R. Martin '66
Novelist, George R.R. Martin is a graduate of Marist High School's Class of 1966. He is well known for his book series "A Song of Ice and Fire," and its television adaptation, "Game of Thrones."
April's issue of The Rolling Stone magazine featured an article that takes an in-depth look at Martin, the man and author.
"On a cold night in January, George R.R. Martin sits inside the Jean Cocteau Cinema, a revival theater that he owns in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he has lived since 1979. The Cinema had been showing the first three seasons of HBO's megahit series Game of Thrones, which is based on Martin's still-in-the-works saga A Song of Ice and Fire. After viewing the ninth episode, "Baelor," in which the story's apparent hero, Ned Stark, is unexpectedly beheaded, with the screen falling to black, Martin sits quietly for several moments, then says, "As many times as I've watched this, it still has great effect. Of course for me, there's so much more to the books." Read the article here.

"For Marist High students, the school's Arts Festival on April 4 wasn't about being judged for prizes or selling a piece. It was about recognition and about feeling good about themselves and the pieces they had created."

"Crystal Vargas already had a distinction in Hudson County sports history. During her days at Marist High School, Vargas became the first female to ever win a game as a pitcher in a boys' varsity baseball game...
A teacher of U.S. history at Marist, Vargas took over the softball program at her alma mater two years ago. It was a program that wasn't exactly successful before she took over, winning just two games and losing 33 in the two years prior to her arrival."
