Marist High School
May/June 2013
Family Newsletter
From the Principal

Dear Marist Families:

In the annals of school years, 2012-2013 will inevitably be remembered as the year of Superstorm Sandy.  At this six-month mark, we hear news updates of how people are faring and we can't help but remember the hours of lost instructional time, the chill in our bones as the cold set in, the waste of food as we emptied our refrigerators, and the endless scrambling to find sources of electricity and Wi-Fi in order to reconnect with the world.  Then we had to make up school days, and postpone and reschedule many events.  But human beings are resilient, and Marist is fortunate that the consequences of the storm ended up to be temporary inconveniences, mere bumps in the road.

On a much brighter note, now is the time of year for celebration.  The tenth annual Arts Festival was a magnificent display not only of our art program but also of our performing arts.  Congratulations to Ms. John and to all our Marist artists and performers.  This Friday and Saturday Marist will stage the musical "Oliver" with a combined cast of Marist High School and St. Joseph Elementary School performers under the direction of Mrs. Beatriz Esteban-Messina.  Click here for more information.  On Friday, May 17, Ms. Vargas and Percussion Discussion will host its second annual extravaganza which was a huge success last year.  It's an event not to be missed.

Not to mention, my personal favorite:  The Academic Awards Banquet to be held Thursday night at 6:30pm.  This is such a joyous occasion, a time when teachers, parents, and especially the students witness and celebrate the results of their hard work and sacrifice.  We look forward as well to the end goal:   graduation.  As we send yet another group of accomplished individuals onto the college of their choice, we pray that they may continue to grow strong in the values of their Marist upbringing.

This brings me to my closing remark for this year.  We talk much during a student's four years at Marist High School about the Marist Values.  Freshmen spend weeks talking about the values, their importance, and their inherent reward.  Each year, the religion teachers refresh the students' memories about the five values.  On Mind, Body, Spirit Day, we revisit the values with a film for the freshmen and sophomores.  Let us not, however, merely pay lip service and live the values only when they are convenient.  The Values of Professional Behavior, Perseverance, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility are not fair weather friends.  We need them to be put into practice at all times, whether we are in uniform or not, in the building or not, as a student and as a graduate, these values are meant to be our guiding light, not just from 8-3, Monday through Friday, for four years of our lives.  The Marist Values are guiding lights for life.  Why not talk to your son/daughter about that and your hopes for them.

Lastly, I would like to wish each of you a happy and safe summer.  I wish our graduates the best of luck in their upcoming endeavors and pray that they keep Marist in their hearts.  We are as much a part of them as they are of us.  I look forward to seeing you in September.

Sincerely,

Ms. Miesnik

Campus Ministry News

The Resurrection of Jesus and the Octave of Easter were observed joyfully on our Mind, Body, Spirit Day with a simple liturgy. The Senior Retreat Leaders presented a Gospel Pageant of the Resurrection and "Knight Jam," our Christian Rock group coordinated by Mr. Ortiz, led us in song. Ms. Miesnik led a reflection about the new life themes of Easter symbols and between Josue Johnson's, shall we say, "vivid" portrayal of St. Peter and the vibrant sounds of the band, Marist celebrated in a way that certainly said "Alleluia!"

Our Service Day on Wednesday of Holy Week was a great success.  Marist students spread the work of the Gospel all over the County and beyond. All reports were good and the kids were eager volunteers. We were very proud of them in the diverse ways that they helped the community.  We received many  "thank you" notes from the local community and many invitations to return.

Ascension Thursday will be celebrated on May 9th and is a Holy Day. There is no school for students. Catholic students are reminded that they are obliged to attend Mass on Ascension Thursday. Faculty will meet for a full day of Professional Development.

Graduation Mass takes place on Thursday, May 30th at 7 PM at our Lady of Mercy Church in Jersey City (very close to Marist). A more formal invitation will be sent to you via the Seniors.  All Seniors are expected to attend. Bring family and friends to thank God for four years of blessings at Marist, and to ask God's blessing on our graduates and their families.  All are invited.

Marist Youth Retreat, a leadership workshop for sophomores from Marist schools in the United States, Canada, Mexico and other Latin American countries, will take place at the Marist Brothers Retreat Center in Esopus, NY over Memorial Day weekend. Six students have been nominated to attend to learn skills that will help them become leaders at Marist High School.

Many of our Seniors made an Encounter Retreat this year and they periodically get together at one of our schools to pray in the Taize style (Taize is an ecumenical  monastery in France which attracts many young people.) Their last trip was to Mt. St Michael in the Bronx where they shared prayer, dinner and  community,  reconnecting with friends they had made on Encounter.

Community Service: volunteers needed! Liberty Health has asked us to send monitors and "water people" to help them with their Newport Half marathon. Parents are welcome along with our students. Contact Ms. Kehoe mkehoe@marist.org  if interested. Saturday, May 11th!

KISS MALARIA GOOD-BYE!Our kids raised over $150.00 for the malaria drive -to buy mosquito nets for kids in countries where mosquito-borne malaria is a problem. That's 75 mosquito nets!
Guidance News

Junior Parents' Night:  Back by popular request!  On Wednesday, May 8th, Ms. Heymer and Ms. E. will be hosting another Junior Parents night to help parents continue to gain knowledge about the college planning process.  We are planning to have a college rep join us to give you another perspective on the process.

May & June SAT's:  May 3rd is the deadline to register for the June  1st SAT's.  We encourage the Junior class to take the June 1st test to get a start on the college process.  The best way to prepare is to practice, practice,  practice.  Use the free resources at www.collegeboard.org  or see Guidance for other tools.  If your student is taking the May 4th SAT, be sure they have a good night's rest, have a good breakfast, and bring a healthy snack and water with them for break time.  Also, make sure they have their admissions ticket, School ID, several #2 pencils (traditional, not mechanical), and a calculator with them before they leave the house!

Guidance Tips for the Summer:  Summer is the perfect time to make strides in the college preparation process-no matter what year your student has completed.  Colleges are looking for consistency in extra-curricular and volunteer activities, so why not start now.  Encourage your student to join a sports league, work at a camp, or volunteer at the local library, church or recreation center.  And don't forget that summer reading!  Junior parents, summer is also a great time to visit those colleges that are farther from home.

Summer Programs
Deadlines are coming up to register for Summer Programs. All counselors are working with students interested in applying to programs.  Some programs are competitive to get into and some have costs attached.  Let us know if you have one in mind for your student and need our assistance, or if you need help finding the right one for your student.

College Acceptance Statistics:

  • Number of students who have been accepted by one or more colleges/universities to date:  56
  • Total amount of scholarship/awards, grants, financial aid offered so far:  $3,166,251
Please note, these numbers are contingent upon students' submitting their acceptance and reward letters to the Guidance Department.  If your Senior has not yet turned in their information, please have them do so ASAP.  We would like to publically congratulate them on the morning announcements for this great accomplishment!
