Marist High School
February 2013
Family Newsletter
From the Principal

Dear Marist Families,

December's tragedy in Newtown, CT has cast a long shadow over schools everywhere, challenging our sense of safety and security.  What we once took for granted, we must now reconsider.  I thought you'd like to know what Marist is doing to further enhance the safety of your children.

First of all, as you may remember, we had a safety audit done almost two years ago.  Suggestions from that audit resulted in our trimming large shrubbery away from our entrances, creating the one way traffic pattern throughout the parking areas, and installing interior cameras at our entrances and exits.  As finances become available, we will install several more cameras in key areas.

Secondly, according to state guidelines, we are increasing and expanding our "Code Black" drills.  "Code Black" indicates that there is an intruder in the building.  Such drills help students practice how to remain safe should such an instance occur.  We are running unannounced drills at varied times under varied circumstances to teach the students to expect the unexpected.

Finally, we remain adamant about preventing students from being unsupervised.  That is why we must remain firm that students must leave the building at 4:00 unless they are in a supervised activity with a teacher or a coach.  If your child is waiting for a ride after a game, practice, or activity, he/she should wait in the foyer of the school, or in front of the school in warm weather if it's still light out.  You would help us tremendously by arranging pick up close to designated times.  Do not leave them unattended.

Our front doors, you may have noticed, do not always close on their own. So please, if you are visiting, be sure to pull the door closed behind you.  Our students are notorious for propping the doors open for their friends or for themselves while they run to the corner store.  It's a habit that we are trying to discourage.

Finally, parking along a yellow line is not only against the law, but more importantly, it's a hazard.  If you park along the yellow line in front of the school, you are preventing emergency vehicles access should their assistance be required.  If there are no parking spaces available in front of school, please use our spacious side lot.

As you know, the safety and well-being of your children are our utmost concern.  Rest assured we are doing all that is reasonably possible to keep them safe while they are under our care.

On a totally different note, as your son/daughter may have told you, Ryan Hansen, the two-year old son of Mr. Chris Hansen '99, our Alumni and Development Director and Assistant Baseball Coach, suffered a brain aneurysm.  Ryan is on his way to recovery, but still in need of our prayers and our support.  To read more about this, go to www.giveforward.com/helpsupportbabyryan . Mr. and Mrs. Hansen ask for our continued prayer.  Our hearts go out to them during these difficult times.

Sincerely,

Ms. Miesnik
Important Notice About Tuition
At Marist High School, teachers, administrators, staff, our advisory board, and the Board of Trustees are all dedicated to delivering the best-value Catholic education available in Hudson County.  To that end, we offer a wide array of college-prep academic programs and extra-curricular activities to prepare your child for life in college and beyond.  Costs associated with delivering these programs are scrutinized constantly to assure tuition is maintained at a reasonable level.  Tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year has been set at $8,600, making Marist again one of the most reasonably-priced Catholic educational options in the area. Remember, that included in this cost are several other "value-added" experiences, such as the SAT prep program and tutoring, services that you might pay extra for in other schools. Since tuition does not cover the entire cost of your child's education, Marist relies heavily upon charitable donations, fundraising, and parents paying bills in a timely manner.  Please do your part, so that we can insure Marist's position as the premier co-educational Catholic high school in Hudson County and surrounding areas.
Academic News

Congratulations to all our Honor Roll students! We are proud of the progress these students have made.  Take time to celebrate these accomplishments at home,   especially good grades on mid-term exams. Keep up the great work!

Progress Reports for the third quarter will be emailed home on Thursday, February 21.  This quarter is shorter than you think.  Don't procrastinate.

Communicate with your son's/daughter's teachers via e-mail or voice-mail, especially if he/she did not do well in a given subject. Now is the time to devise an improvement plan. Help is available: ask a teacher for extra help, go to the Library Media Center for tutoring after school Monday through Thursday, or visit Study Hall. Although Study Hall is mandatory for those who fail two or more subjects, all are welcome!

Activity Period takes place this month on Wednesday, February 6.  Ask your son/daughter what activity they are participating in and how much fun they are having!

Chapter 192 is a free program provided through the Bayonne Board of Education that offers remediation for students who have scored below the 40th percentile on standardized tests.  You may want to revisit this opportunity now that you have reviewed your son'/daughter's PSAT results. If your son/daughter scored below the 40th percentile and is not currently enrolled in Chapter 192, feel free to contact Mr. Mathews at cmathews@marist.org.  Remember this is a free service, so take advantage!
Campus Ministry News

Encounter:  As we go to press, nine of our Seniors, two faculty chaperones and several alumni team leaders are on the Marist Encounter. This retreat, which brings students from many of our Marist schools together, helps Seniors focus and reflect on their relationship with God and their plan for a spiritual life. Encounters build community, a real sense of belonging to the Marist Family.   They will be hoping for snow in Esopus -  which is beautiful in any season. If you are ever in the area, drop in and see the grounds:  The Marist Brothers Retreat House is right on Route 9W.

Teens for Jeans:  We know how fast they grow so we are collecting gently used jeans for homeless kids this month.  They can be left in Campus Ministry or in Ms. Gonzalez's classroom.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday Feb. 13th. Ashes will be distributed during the day in our newly renovated Chapel. Thanks to the hard work of Br. Richard VanHouten, Director of Education for the Marist Brothers, we obtained a grant to renovate our Chapel. Other donors included Ms. Doris Reischach, the secretary in our Marist Provincial Office and several other Marist schools. All are welcome to attend Ash Wednesday services which will be held at the beginning of each period.

KISS Malaria Goodbye: During Lent, we will be raising funds for KISS (KISS Malaria Goodbye!).  For $6.00 we can buy mosquito nets for three Third World children. Here's your chance to get rid of all those pennies! We will begin KISS fittingly, right before Valentine's Day! Our community will be invited to throw spare change into a mosquito net. Our school goal is to become a Community of Service.  KISS is a good way to express our dedication to the less fortunate in our world.

The Legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.: Our Martin Luther King Prayer Service was held on Jan. 24th and provided us with an opportunity to reflect on Dr. King's call to service. As a community, we also reflected on the use of ethnic and racial slurs and vowed to refrain from ever using them.  In a subsequent year-level assembly on anti-bullying and the importance of standing up for one another, we also considered Dr. King's words,  "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." During February, traditionally Black History Month, let us continue to use the richness of Dr. King's life to enrich our own.
Guidance News

New Computers!   Guidance has finally acquired new computers for the College Resource Center.  The machines are faster, smaller, and much more capable of doing the work the college planning process requires these days.  This is great news for the present seniors and all those to follow!

College Acceptances and Scholarships:  Thus far, ญญ 28 of our 87 seniors have received their acceptances from one or more colleges for a total of 45 actual acceptances.  As a class, the seniors have already accrued $936,400 in scholarships, grants, and financial aid.  Ms. Heymer, Ms. E., and the interns are doing a magnificent job expediting the college application process for our seniors.   If your son or daughter is one of the few seniors who have not filed an application yet, encourage them to get on it!  Go to Marist...Go to College!

PSAT Results:  The freshmen, sophomores and juniors have received their results from the PSAT's they took in the fall.  They met with their counselors and the scores were explained.   We will be working with the Juniors to get them registered at www.collegeboard.org, and encouraging them to register for the March 9th SAT's which are offered at Marist.  The deadline to register is February 8th.  If they are eligible for a fee waiver, have them see Ms. Heymer or Ms. Eisenmenger.  The Juniors should already be immersed in the college process.  If they are not, encourage them to get started today!

College Goal Sunday: Senior parents and students, this one is for you.  If you need help actually sitting down and completing the FAFSA, block off February 24th on your calendar for this event.  Local colleges host a variety of financial aid professionals to offer you FREE help in completing the FAFSA.  All seniors were given a flier about the event, but you can find out more information at http://www.njcollegegoalsunday.org .  There are several convenient sites.  Please note: the Newark site (NJIT) will be hosting the event on February 17th, not the 24th.

Career Day: The long anticipated Career Day, designed for our Juniors and our Seniors is coming up on Friday, February 8th.  We're trying a new format that looks to be more enriching for the students.  We have professionals joining us from the following career areas: Law, Business, Computer Science, Social Work, Careers in Higher Education, Engineering, Medicine, Fashion, Media Arts & Technology, Music, and Law Enforcement.  We are very excited, and hope the students are too.

Summer Programs
: As always, our counselors are hard at work encouraging students to participate in enrichment programs over the summer.  Now is the time to enroll.  Encourage your student to see their counselor TODAY about what types of programs are out there.  Please note, several of you may have already received information in the mail about certain programs, as we nominate students throughout the year.  Do not hesitate to contact the guidance department with any questions or concerns.   Summer Programs are a great way to enhance your college application!
Other News
Voicemail and Email Blasts:  Lately, we've made an effort to send voicemail blasts on a regular, weekly basis, usually on a Monday night at 7:00.   So far, feedback has been positive.  E-mail blasts are more occasional and are needed when there is an attachment or form to download. Please, let us know if it gets to be too much!

Strategic Planning Retreat: Mr. Slaski, President of Marist High School, is working with Catholic Schools Management, a consulting company who will help Marist design a strategic plan for the future.  This is an important step in the life of any school.  We prosper when we plan.  Mr. Slaski has invited some faculty, some parents, and some students along with some Directory Members and community representatives, to a Strategic Planning Retreat the weekend of February 22.  Stay tuned for other news that will follow this inaugural event.

Class Trips Continue: The Sophomore trip to Philadelphia is being rescheduled to mid-February.  The cost is $30.  The permission slip can be picked up in the main office as soon as the date is set.  Next stop, Boston for the Juniors, April 27!  Encourage your son/daughter to take advantage of these opportunities.

Freshmen Registration takes place on Saturday, February 2, from 9:00AM-12:00 Noon. If you know someone who has a current eighth grader who has been accepted and intends to enroll at Marist, please remind them of this important date. We cannot guarantee a place in next year's freshmen class unless the prospective students register on Saturday, February 2.

Dress Down will be held on Wednesday, February 8.  Students who choose to dress down will contribute $1.00 which will support our Model U.N. competition which takes place at St. Peter's College in March.

MEDQUEST:  The MEDQUEST program continues to grow. The MEDQUEST Simulation Lab is expanding to include infant and pediatric care. The senior and junior classes had the opportunity to have hands-on training with Dr. M. Polisin, a Marist graduate and Pediatrician.  In addition, the Assistant Vice President of Service Excellence from Bayonne Medical Center came to Marist to train a group of juniors and seniors to prepare them as volunteers.  The freshmen and sophomores had an interactive demonstration by the Director of Dental Hygiene from Eastern International College.  Several students are performing their clinical hours at local dental and medical offices.  Many exciting and educational things are happening in the MEDQUEST Program!  We are proud of this extremely innovative program!

Faculty Professional Day is scheduled for Wednesday, February 13.  Teachers begin at the regular time.  Students begin an hour later.  Please refer to Schedule "C" found in the Student Handbook.  Remember that on a Schedule "C", Marist transportation picks up a half hour later.

February Break:  No classes will be held on February 14, 15, and 18, giving the faculty and students a five-day weekend.   Enjoy it!

Shakespeare Returns to MaristOn Wednesday, February 27, a professional Shakespeare Company from Madison, NJ called Shakespeare Live! will present Comedy of Errors to our entire student body. This production is sponsored by our English Department. As you may know, each year a different Shakespearian play is presented to our students, enabling them to see at least four of Shakespeare's plays by the time they graduate. Thanks to Mr. Pratko, our English chair, for arranging this and to Ms. Heymer, Ms. Sorbara and the NHS members for helping prepare the student body prior to the production.

Safety and Security Reminder: We remind you that the Knight Club and the Library Media Center are open every day after school and there are other activities and clubs meeting at that time.  However, the school closes at 4:00 PM.  Students are not allowed to be in the building after this time unless they are supervised by a faculty member or a coach.  In addition, home basketball games end by 9:00 PM and the building closes at 9:30 PM.  Please keep this in mind as you make arrangements to pick up your son/daughter.

School Closings:  In the event of inclement weather, you will receive an automated phone call from the school.  Please listen to the message carefully and completely.  You can also find out if school is closed or if there is a delayed opening by logging onto our website at www.marist.org.  School closing or delays will be placed at the top of the Marist home page.

MSG Varsity at http://www.msgvarsity.com/new-jersey/marist is now our host for Marist News that is produced by our students.  The articles, photos, and videos are all student-created.  Many thanks to our moderator:  Ms. John.  If you are an Optimum Online subscriber, you can view all of the materials found on MSG Varsity.  If not, check it out anyway for the limited view to at least see what's been posted there by Marist students.  Many of the submissions are also posted on our own website.
Marist Parents' Association News

Marist Parents' Association Fundraising Update: So far, we have raised nearly $8,000 toward our goal of purchasing room darkening shades for the gym and perhaps replacement curtains for the cafeteria.  This has largely been through the efforts of several parents who work the concession stands at all home games and the committee of parents who are organizing the Vendor Bazaar.  Interested in helping out and haven't been contacted?  E-mail Mark Lenzo at mlenzo@marist.org.

The Vendor Bazaar has quickly morphed into a huge success at the hands of chairpersons, Mr. and Mrs. Marshall, and their committee.  We will have over 70 vendors on February 9!  Please tell your neighbors and friends!  Come join us either as a volunteer or as a shopper, or both!  Who can resist?

A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to bless and dedicate the new sign out front will be held at the close of the next Vendor Bazaar.  Join us for some camaraderie and some pizza at 3:30 on Saturday, February 9.  You might want to check out the Vendor Bazaar that day as well!  We need customers!  Tell your neighbors!

Next Meeting will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at 6:30 in the Marist Cafeteria.  Hope to see you there!
