principalFrom the Principal

Dear Marist Families,

As the days of lost power gained on us, I became increasingly anxious for our Marist students and you, their families.  We are so aware that even in the best of times, life can be trying.  Hurricane Sandy may have added insult to injury for some of us.

What we have in our favor is that we are Marist.  We are a faith-based community, a family that is here for one another.  As we resume our daily interaction, be sure that you share your needs with us.  If we can be of help in any way, let us know.  All of our Guidance Counselors can direct you to services.  Ms. Kehoe has FEMA information and is ready and willing to help our families to complete necessary forms.  Contact her at mkehoe@marist.org or at ext. 220.

We are obviously concerned about lost instructional time as we are sure you are.  To that end, we've made decisions that we hope will salvage time between now and the mid-term exams.   Here's the plan:

  1. We will extend the first marking period until Wednesday, November 14; you can expect report cards to be mailed to you by the 16th or the 17th at the latest.  Study Hall will begin Monday, November 19th.
  2. The Parent-Teacher Conference planned for this Thursday night, Nov. 8, will be postponed since report cards will not be ready.
  3. We will not hold Principal's Breakfast , Year Level Assemblies, or Faculty Professional Development  on November 13 as previously planned so that Tuesday, November 13 will be a full instructional day.
  4. The Coop exam has been postponed until Friday, November 16, so there will be no class that day, but there will be a full day of class this Friday, the 9th.
  5. In addition, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving will be a full day of classes as well, instead of a half day of service as previously planned.
  6. The Teachers will forego their retreat day on Monday, December 10 so that we can have a full day of classes that day.
  7. Lastly, we will have a day of regular instruction on Monday, January 14 so exams will begin a day later than originally scheduled, on the 15th of January.

The calendar associated with the website now reflects these changes.  We feel that this arrangement will help us recoup at least some of the instructional time we've lost these past seven days.

Finally, let me take a moment this November to remember all that I am thankful for. I hope you will take a moment to do the same.  I remain ever grateful and humbled by the opportunity to serve you as Principal.  I am grateful to each of you for your avid support.  The faculty and staff at Marist are second to none, and a real blessing to me.  But ever and always, the students are the ones who warm my heart.  May you enjoy a blessed, warm, well-lit, Thanksgiving with family and friends.

Sincerely,

Ms. Miesnik

Reports Cards are scheduled to be mailed home Friday, November 16th.  If your child is struggling, you may call or email each teacher and devise a plan for improvement.  Remember that communication between home and school is essential for student success.  Please note: Report cards will not be mailed to students who have outstanding tuition balances.

Study Hall: Students who have failed 2 or more subjects on the first report card must attend a mandatory study hall from 2:45 - 3:45 Monday - Thursday, beginning on Monday, November 19.  Here students will be able to complete homework, read, review for tests and get extra help.  We encourage parents to have the students pay the Study Hall fee of $25.00 out of their own pocket.  If the fee is not paid during the first 2 weeks of study hall, it will increase to $30.00 and you will be billed through the Finance Office.

Extra Help: If your son/daughter is struggling in a subject, he/she may contact a teacher for extra help or receive tutoring from a member of the National Honor Society on Monday through Thursday in the Cooperative Learning Room inside the Library Media Center.  Help is always available.  Make sure your son/daughter takes advantage of it.

Chapter 192 is a program provided at Marist High School through the Bayonne Board of Ed.  You received a letter and application in the mail if your son/daughter is eligible for this program.  Eligibility is determined by performance on standardized tests. The program provides the opportunity for students to improve their basic skills using a computer assisted program. You must send back a signed application in order to enroll.  Once your child is enrolled in the program, classes will meet once a week per skill for approximately one hour after school.  You will be notified of the day of the week in advance. Please note that these classes are free of charge.  If you have any questions or would like a copy of the application, please feel free to contact Mr. Mathews who will be coordinating the program at Marist High School by dialing (201) 437-4545 extension 338 or via email:  cmathews@marist.org.

SAT's, the college entrance test, will be administered at Marist on Saturday, November 17.  Students should report to school by 7:30 AM with two #2 pencils, a calculator, a PHOTO ID, and their admission ticket.   All seniors should have registered for this test.  If not, he/she should find out from Ms. Heymer or Ms. Eisenmenger when and where the next test is scheduled.

Senior Parents: Has your son/daughter begun to apply to colleges?  Has your son/daughter narrowed his/her list down to schools he/she is really interested in?  Now is the time to attend to this very important endeavor.  The longer you wait, the more stressful it becomes.  Call Ms. Heymer (201-437-4545 x304)or Ms. Eisenmenger  (201 - 437 -4545 x301) Also, you may e-mail them at nheymer@marist.org or meisenmenger@marist.org  if you need assistance.

COOP Exam
: The Catholic High School entrance exam is scheduled at Marist on Friday, November 16, beginning at 8:00 AM.  There are no classes for Marist students on that day.  Do you know someone who has an eighth grader who would like to attend a Catholic school in September 2013 but has not yet registered?  Call Ms. McQuery, our Admission Officer at (201-437-4545 x225) or e-mail her at tmcquery@marist.org for further information.  Thanks for spreading the word about this important test.
Campus Ministry News
Freshmen visited the Marist Brothers' Retreat house in Esopus for their first time on October 11th. They enjoyed the retreat, which had been planned for them by the Senior Retreat Leaders. They prayed at the new outdoor Chapel, toured the grounds, met in small groups for discussion with their Seniors, hiked to the river and "made toilet paper mummies." We have some precious pictures that will be very meaningful to them when they are Seniors. Their behavior was exemplary.  In this month of Thanksgiving, we are thankful for our wonderful kids!

Senior Encounter was held in Esopus October 18-21.  Ten members of our senior class, along with students from other Marist schools participated in this four day retreat, which gave them the opportunity to think, pray and discover more of who they are in their relationship with God.  Our seniors were accompanied by Mr. Power and Mr. Short. Two of our graduates were on the Young Adult team. Girls will have a chance to go in February.

Sophomore Day of Reflection:  Originally set for November 8, the event has been postponed due to Hurricane Sandy.  Stay tuned for the date to be reset.  Sophomores who are eager to return to our Retreat House in Esopus for a Day of Reflection  may sign up. They will depart after homeroom and return by 5:45. Dress down, long pants (no shorts,) shoes for hiking, nothing really good... we are in the country! A Day to Reflect and pray and have fun and serious talks with classmates. Attendance is optional. Those who choose not to attend will attend regular classes. Cost is $25.00. If money is an issue, see Ms Kehoe. No one should miss out because of money. Permission slips will be required.

Food Drive: The Marist spirit extends to our brothers and sisters who suffer in poverty.  From November 1-21 students will collect non-perishable food items for local food pantries and soup kitchens.  In the first part of the collection held during October,  students collected spare change which was donated to Bayonne's "Make a Difference Day" in which all the schools in town participate. November's food Drive will be donated to a local soup kitchen. (Visit their website www.stjohnssoupkitchen.org for more info.) St. John's also runs a program Wounded Warriors to give special care to homeless vets. Students should bring any donated items to homeroom to get points for their class. Thanks in advance for your generosity.

Ms. Gail, our cafeteria manager, is raffling off a stuffed ghoul (a Marist sweatshirt stuffed with candy) for the benefit of the Food Drive. There's a lot of candy in there for only $1.00 a chance.  Ms. Gail often models a true spirit of generosity to our kids. I you have a sweet tooth tell your student to buy you a chance!

Thanksgiving Prayer Service is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21 beginning at 9:45.  Students will receive a Thanksgiving Family Prayer, should you wish to use it at your Thanksgiving table.  As always, you're invited to join us as we gather to thank God for the many blessings we have received.

The Day of Service has been postponed.  November 21st was supposed to mark the Inauguration of our Lean on Me/Love Your Neighbor Community Service Day. Each class was supposed to participate in a group service project. The freshmen will experience a Hunger Banquet, while sorting the food for donation and hearing from a representative of the Community Food Bank. Sophomores will undertake Service Projects around the school.  Juniors will do our Annual beach Clean-up at Bayonne Park and Seniors will join teachers at various non-profits around the area to donate their time. Our intention is to generate a Culture of Service, which is such a part of being Marist.  Don't worry:  this event will be rescheduled!  In fact, we are currently researching ways to be helpful to the local community in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Standardized Testing: The deadline to register for the December 1st SAT is November 1st with late registration (for a fee) available until November 16th.  The deadline for the December 8th ACT is November 2nd with late registration (for a fee) by November 16th.  This is especially important for Seniors.  Please note that both programs have changed their security measures which impact the identification process.  Check the websites for more information: www.collegeboard.org and www.actstudent.org.

Focus Seniors: Ms. E. will be taking the Focus Seniors to visit the Regional Center at Fairleigh Dickenson University on November 14th.  Parents, look for the permission slips on or around November 9th.  The trip will include an information session about the application process, 504 accommodations, and various options available to students with learning disabilities (also applicable for schools other than FDU) along with a tour of the University (weather permitting), as well as a free lunch.  If you have any further questions, please contact Ms. E. at (201) 437-4545 ext. 301 or by email at meisenmenger@marist.org.

Career Day
: Due to the time lost to Hurricane Sandy, we will be postponing our Career Day until the second semester.  Career Day is a time for students to learn a little more about what each career entails and what they can be doing to prepare for their future.
