Report from Troy Vaughn,

 Community Representative to the

Public Safety Realignment Team (PSRT)

After several months of discussion, the Probation Department announced this month that they would establish a CBO/FBO Advisory Committee. It will expand the representation of these organizations from having a single voice trying to represent all points of view from our community to a more formal structure in which a broader range of voices can be heard.

It has been my privilege to represent you, but I've only been a single voice; and I strongly believe the Advisory Committee will allow us to have broader and more diverse representation from the community. It's not in mine, but our collective voices and hands that speak and hold promise of change for this vulnerable population

I will be involved in the development of this Advisory Committee and will play a leadership role in its on-going work. I will be soliciting input into the structure and charter of this Advisory Committee through LARRP and would love to get your feedback (troy@weingart.org).

I'd like to remind you that the PSRT meetings are open to the public and that there is a public comments agenda item at the end of each meeting. I urge you to attend. These meetings are held the 2nd Thursday of each month at 3 p.m. at the Hall of Administration.

This article is the first of what will be a monthly perspective on the PSRT's diligent work and my view and reflections as your community representative. Let me know what topics you would like for me to address.

I look forward to my continued service on the PSRT, and expanding our efforts to bring quality housing and services to those who are returning to their community from incarceration.

Introducing Gina Clayton

My name is Gina Clayton, and I am so thrilled to begin working with you part-time as the new Research & Policy Associate for the Los Angeles Regional Reentry Partnership.

I am a native of the Los Angeles area and graduated from the University of Southern California before attending Harvard Law School, where I worked extensively on criminal justice issues - ranging from Ban the Box and criminal record sealing to Fourth Amendment rights, sentencing, and death penalty reform. For the past few years, I practiced law at a holistic public defense office in Harlem, New York where I instituted a collateral consequences practice aimed at preventing the eviction and homelessness of women and families following an arrest, charge, or criminal conviction.

I am very much looking forward to assisting LARRP with its vitally important advocacy activities - particularly as we move forward in a coordinated fashion to usher in the implementation of Realignment and push for just, compassionate, and evidence based reintegration policies in Los Angeles.  You can reach me at gclayton@drugpolicy.org or policy@lareentry.org for questions, ideas, or if you would like to be more involved. Thank you!
