BREAKOUT SESSION #1: WORKSHOP

Using Evidence-Based Practices in the Real World:

Telling Your Story to Supporters, Funders, and the Community

 

This interactive workshop will help you to understand and utilize evidence-based practices to achieve better results in your organization and with funders. You will learn:

 

  • What exactly are Evidence-Based Practices?
  • Questions funders are asking and how to more effectively answer them
  • Common pitfalls of the evidence-based practice approach
  • How to describe your program using Evidence-Based Practice language
  • Overcoming real world obstacles to implementing Evidence Based Practices

Presenter:

Brian Center, J.D., founder and principal of Center Solutions
Mr. Center provides advice and support in the areas of non-profit management, law, fundraising, capacity building, advocacy, evidence-based practice and program development. He developed his expertise over the past 10 years doing policy and program work for the LA County Board of Supervisors, Sheriff's Department, and as Executive Director of the non-profit, A Better LA.

 

BREAKOUT SESSION #2: PANEL DISCUSSION AND Q&A   

Dos and Don'ts of Successful Proposals:

Advice from Reviewers of NOFA and RFP Submissions

   

The panel will discuss the most common issues they see when reviewing proposals, and the best ways to ensure your proposal is successful. The panel will answer questions from the group. Panel participants will all be experienced NOFA and RFP submission reviewers.

Panels will vary from conference to conference, but may include:

UPDATE: The Shifting State of California's Criminal Justice System

 

California's Criminal Justice System is SHIFTING. Hear about:

  • Sentencing - From State Prison to County Jails: a review of LA Jail capacity and opportunities for alternative sentencing
  • Supervision - From State Parole to County Probation: a review of populations: PRCS, 1170 (h), and parole revocations
  • Services - From CDCR contracts to LA County contracts: a review of the funding and contracts available (or not) for community-based reentry services
 

Presenters:

Lynne Lyman, California State Director, Drug Policy Alliance

A native of Los Angeles, Lynne Lyman is the California State Director for the Drug Policy Alliance, leading criminal justice reform work and overseeing all other aspects of the California policy and advocacy work. Receiving her M.P.A. from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and her B.A. from UC Berkeley, Lyman has spent her career working in MA and CA on issues relating to racial justice, youth violence and criminal justice system reform, inside government, with advocacy organizations, and working political campaigns.

 

Hanna Liebman Dershowitz, Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Reform Advocate, ACLU of Southern California

Hanna's public policy background includes serving as General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor to Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis, Legal Director of Texas Appleseed, and Consulting Attorney to the Innocence Project, helping the New York-based pioneering organization initiate innocence-related reforms in Texas.  Hanna has taught legislation and statutory interpretation at the University of Houston Law Center, and has been a frequent speaker on indigent defense reform and other criminal law policy issues. Hanna
received her J.D. with honors from Brooklyn Law School, and her bachelor's degree from Oberlin College.
