LARRP Co-Sponsors District Attorney Candidate Forum

The District Attorney is one of the most powerful elected officials in the state and plays a critical role in the criminal justice system. Recent decisions in that office are hindering and helping our efforts towards criminal justice reform, including the implementation of pretrial programs and alternatives to incarceration.

Join a community forum with the candidates to discuss "Public Safety Realignment," drug policy, juvenile justice, sentencing reform, and ending the death penalty. Click here for event flyers in English and Spanish.

POLICY CORNER

The LARRP Policy Committee continues its efforts at both the state and local levels levels. While the current state legislative session has concluded, the committee is making plans to support and perhaps initiate bills for the new session.

Within Los Angeles County, the committee continues to provide research and data to support the implementation of pretrial programs and alternatives to incarceration. The goals are to reduce jail population, increase pubic safety by increasing rehabilitative approaches, and avoid new construction or costly, long-term contracts that would send county jail inmates to other counties.

The Policy Committee meets monthly on the 3rd Friday from 11 .m. - 1 p.m. Contact info@lareentry for further information.

Attend the PSRT Monthly Meetings!

The Public Safety Realignment Team (PSRT) is the body of county departments responsible for implementing prison realignment in Los Angeles County.  They have one community representative. Monthly meetings are held on the 2nd Thursday from 3 - 4 p.m. at the Hall of Administration, 7th Floor.

Los Angeles County Releases Report on Deaths from

Chronic Liver Disease & Cirrhosis

Los Angeles County Dept. of Pubic Health recently released a report titled "Disparities in Deaths from Chronic Liver Disease and Cirrhosis, Los Angeles County, 2000-2008". Each year, chronic liver disease and cirrhosis kills more than 1,100 people in Los Angeles County. It is often under-recognized as an important health concern, especially among Hispanics, who have the highest rates of death from chronic liver disease.

The most common causes of chronic liver disease are excessive alcohol consumption, chronic infection with viral hepatitis, and drug-induced liver damage. Obesity can also increase the risk for developing chronic liver disease, especially if combined with these other risk factors, causing a condition called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Steps that can be taken to prevent chronic liver disease include drinking in moderation, being vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, not misusing over-the-counter medications, and following healthcare provider instructions when taking prescription medications. Maintaining a healthy body weight is also important. The report is available online at http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/epi/
