July 12th Membership Meeting to Focus on County Department Implementation & ACLU Realignment Report

Join us on July 12th for the LARRP membership meeting to hear updates on AB 109 realignment from the Probation Dept. and Dept. of Public Health.  This is an opportunity to hear the latest data and plans as realignment continues to unfold.

The second part of the meeting will feature the new ACLU "Public Safety Realignment:  California at a Crossroads."  This report presents a series of policy recommendations aimed to help public policy makers take advantage of state prison realignment to tackle complex criminal justice challenges by implementing policies and practices based on evidence.

Our speaker, Hanna Liebman Dershowitz, is the Criminal Justice and Drug Policy Reform Advocate at the ACLU of Southern California. Her public policy background includes serving as General Counsel and Senior Policy Advisor to Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis, Legal Director of Texas Appleseed, and Consulting Attorney to the Innocence Project, helping the New York-based pioneering organization initiate innocence-related reforms in Texas.  Hanna is an active member of the LARRP Policy & Advocacy Committee.

Attend the Public Safety Realignment Team Monthly Meetings

Realignment in Los Angeles County is managed by the Public Safety Realignment Team (PSRT), which was created by the Board of Supervisors to report and advise the Board on public safety realignment matters.  The PSRT meets monthly on the 2nd Thursday of each month at the County Hall of Administration.  Each meeting has a period set for public comment so this is an opportunity to give input directly to the decision-makers.

Meeting agendas and locations are posted on the internet: http://www.ccjcc.info/ccjcc_home.asp

Los Angeles County Realignment Report

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors directed the Countywide Criminal Justice Coordination Committee (CCJCC) to provide status reports on realignment implementation in the County.

POLICY CORNER

The Policy & Advocacy Committee has been quite busy during this legislative session.  They have reviewed proposed legislation, determined priorities, and sent letters of support or opposition for the top priorities.  Look for policy action alerts as these measures are addressed in committee during the August legislative session.  The committee will be seeking your help in letting our legislators know our position on these issues.

"Ban the Box" Legislation Stalled for this Year

On June 28, the State Senate Governance and Finance Committee did not pass AB 1831, which would have required that cities and counties "ban the box" on any initial employment application that asks applicants to provide criminal history information.  The bill will not move forward this year.

The LARRP Policy & Advocacy Committee will continue to prioritize this issue and will work with others to address the concerns raised during the committee process in hopes of  amending it and submitting it during the next legislative session.

LARRP Capacity Building Workshop

"Strategic Fund Development for Non-Profit Organizations"

LARRP is teaming with the Jemmott Rollins Group (JRG) to present a half-day workshop to help organizations to address fund development needs from a strategic perspective.  The workshop is limited to 25 people, available on a first registered, first served basis.

July 19th from 1 to 5 p.m.  - East San Gabriel Valley area - Click link to register:

http://larrpfunding3.eventbrite.com When your reservation is confirmed, you will be contacted with information about the specific location.

This workshop is designed for organizations with limited resources that are struggling to figure out how to serve the needs of the re-entering population. This will be a highly interactive and participant-engaged experience that will further the understanding of fund development and ways to improve opportunities for more resources.

The workshop objectives are:

*   To use a strengths-based approach to outline and position participant organization for more resources.

*   To role-play negotiations with potential funders.

*   To examine common errors made by nonprofit organizations when seeking funds.

*   To promote collaborative rather than competitive approaches.
