A Message From Our Principal

Our students and teachers have done a wonderful job this year.  Our teachers have raised the academic expectations and rigor to meet our new state standards, and our students have responded.  Our Math and Literacy labs have been tremendously successful in improving students' academic achievement.  When students attend school regularly and put forth a sustained effort, our teachers have been helping them grow academically.  One piece of this can be seen in our unofficial state OAKS scores for this year.  Here are some highlights:

  • Highest overall school Reading percentage since state testing began
  • One of the highest overall school Math percentages and highest since the state raised the cut score in 2010
  • Highest 8th grade Reading and Math  percentages since state testing began
  • 2nd highest 7th grade Reading percentage and highest since the raised cut score
  • Highest 6th and 7th grade Math percentages since the raised cut score
  • Highest 6th grade Reading percentage since the raised the cut score

We still have work to do in getting our students ready for the rigor of the new standards and will continue to focus on preparing our students for success in high school.  Academic growth is strongly connected with attendance and behavior.  While we still have some work to do with attendance, this has been one of the best groups of students in terms of behavior that I have worked with in my 12 years as an administrator.  Thank you to our students for their excellent behavior and to our parents for setting high expectations for behavior and supporting us when we hold students accountable.

As we wrap up the 2013-14 school year, there are always several things going on.  Please check the calendar and/or website for information and don't hesitate to call us with questions.

I'd also like to extend a big thank you and fond farewell to Marcia Samples, the Principal's Secretary, who will be retiring at the end of this school year.  Mrs. Samples has been at BMS since 2003 and was secretary at Bull Run elementary before that.  She has had a great 21 years of service to the district and will be missed.  Best wishes for a Happy Retirement, Mrs. Samples!
