Leadership News

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5th-9th and Leadership students have been working for the past month to prepare for this week long celebration.  We have made appreciation posters for each teacher, created 3 bulletin boards throughout the school, and planned the annual teacher car wash for Friday, May 9th.  Leadership worked with the PTC, classified staff, and the district in planning a thank you event for each day.

On Saturday, May 10th, we will be doing a road clean-up for BMS.  We adopted Dee Street, Wally Street, and School Avenue a few years ago and each spring, we do a community service event to pick up trash.  This road clean-up will start at 9:30am and end at 1:00pm.

On May 19th and 20th, Naas Elementary, Kelso Elementary and Sandy Grade 5th graders will be visiting our school and leadership will be giving them tours.

Library News

A big THANK YOU to Sayge Noakes (student) and LaLonnie O'Meara (retired Library Tech) for donating new hardcover copies of The Divergent Trilogy, with 2 extra paperback copies of the first book, to our library!  Thank you both for helping us at BMS put more books into the hands of our students!!!

This year our PTC not only purchased the books needed for Oregon Battle of the Books, they also gave us an extra $200 to purchase more library books!  Check out the Library Bulletin Board in the hallway for the titles.

Books we just can't get enough of at BMS:

Stung by Bethany Wiggins

Wonder by R.J. Palacio

The Forest of Hands and Teeth  by Carrie Ryan

Do you have gently used or new books, at middle school level, that you would like to donate to our library?  Contact Mrs. Bush at Melody.Bush@ortrail.k12.or.us

A Message From Our Principal

It's hard to believe we are down to our last 5 weeks of school!  There is a lot going on as we head towards June.  The first round of our OAKS testing is complete and we have started our 2nd round of testing.  We have seen some tremendous growth from students who have been in our math and literacy labs.  Our teachers have really focused in on the standards and skills students need to be successful.  Students who have attended regularly, utilized their class time, and have taken their time on the tests have demonstrated some fantastic growth.  We have already surpassed the percentage of students meeting the standard in almost every grade level and subject with our second round just beginning.  Kudos to our students and teachers who have been really working hard!

Speaking of our teachers, this week is Teacher Appreciation week.  Our teachers have done a great job this year working with the new standards, a new schedule, and new intervention labs.  I am thankful to be part of such a great group of teachers here at Boring Middle School!

With the end of the year fast approaching, the warm weather is with us (in between periods of rain, of course).  We know that it can get warm in the building, but we still want to make sure our students are appropriately covered.  We appreciate your support in helping us with our dress code.

Please read through our newsletter for some important end-of-the year information.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at 503-668-9393.  Also, please note the school calendar for next year.  School starts a week earlier on Monday, August 25th.  Our BMS Open House is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, August 20th.  Registration information will be mailed out in early August.

Have a great May!

Immunization Exemptions

New process for claiming non-medical exemptions to school immunization requirements

Senate Bill 132 changed the process for parents to claim a non-medical exemption to school immunization requirements.  The new process for a non-medical exemption (formerly called religious exemption) started March 1, 2014.  Parents choosing a non-medical exemption to immunization requirements will be required to submit to the school documentation showing either:

1.   Parents talked to a health care practitioner.  The practitioner can sign a non-medical exemption form that the parent will submit to their child's school with the child's completed Certificate of Immunization.

2.  Viewed an online vaccine education module at www.healthoregon.org/vaccineexemption.  The parent or guardian will print a certificate of completion at the end of the module to be turned into their child's school along with the child's Certificate of Immunization Status.

The law changes the language from "religious exemption" to non-medical exemption.  Parents may claim a non-medical exemption for any reason, including but not limited to religious or philosophical beliefs.

If the non-medical exemption was signed prior to March 1, 2014, the form does not need to be resubmitted.  If the parent or guardian chooses to make updates to the exemption on file, they will need to complete the online module or receive education from their healthcare provider.

PBIS
Hello from the PBIS Team:

As we start to wind down another year here at BMS we would like to share some of the overall results that we feel to be outstanding.

The PBIS system has always been at the heart of creating an environment that encourages good behavior among it's students.  With that in mind, we always strive to reward the school community for their efforts of being safe, respectful, and responsible to each other.

Throughout this year we have given out a record number of URGreats for spontaneous acts of kindness or responsible behavior.  The student store, weekly raffles, and monthly drawings have been enjoyed by the students for their hard work.

This year our records show that we have a record number of students that have NOT received a strike all year.  With progress such as this we look forward to working with our students again next year in increasing numbers even further.  So, until then, we wish you the very best as we enter the summer season.

Sincerely,
The PBIS Team
