CHI Franciscan Harrison Medical Center Back in Regence Network

Regence announced that they reached a deal with CHI Franciscan Harrison Medical Center on a new contract providing Regence members access to all local health care services at Harrison Medical Center and Harrison HealthPartners at in-network rates. The new agreement, which became effective Feb. 15, 2015, is a win-win for residents of Kitsap County and the Olympic Peninsula.

Anthem Cyber-Attack Update 
Anthem, one of the nation's largest health insurers, recently experienced a sophisticated cyber attack. This resulted in unauthorized access to Anthem's information. Regence and Premera are separate companies from Anthem and their systems were not breached, however members using the BlueCard may have been impacted.  The states where Anthem operates are: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Between the two local carriers over 215,000 current and past members were affected by the Anthem attack.

Regence BlueShield
Anthem has notified Regence that approximately 100,000 current and former Regence members were affected by the cyber-attack over the last ten years. This includes about 38,000 current or former members who live in our four state region (Idaho, Oregon, Utah, and Washington) and received medical care in any of the states where Anthem operates, and 62,000 current or former members who live out-of-state and received health care services in an Anthem service area.  Details 

Premera Blue Cross

Anthem has notified Premera that approximately 115,000 current and former member's data may be affected. Anthem and Premera are separate organizations, and both part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA). Premera worked closely with the BCBSA and Anthem to determine how their members were affected.  These members received medical care in one of the 14 states where Anthem operates.

Employees May Not Leave Their Ex's On The Group Plans

gavel After being terminated for wrongfully continuing to cover his ex-wife under his employer's group health plan, this employee filed suit. According to the employee, when he informed his manager that he was required to maintain his ex-wife's health coverage in their divorce, the manager stated that he would leave the ex-spouse on the plan.  This case demonstrates that training, not just for benefits personnel but for managers and others who may have more direct contact with employees, is a key component in good benefit plan administration. Although the employer prevailed here, this lawsuit could have been avoided completely if the manager had handled the situation appropriately. Also keep in mind that periodic audits to verify dependent eligibility can be a useful tool to help identify and correct these problems sooner.  Court Case

 

Compliance Dangers of Assisting Employees With Individual Policy Arrangements 

Two IRS Information Letters, dated September 2014 but first released publicly in late December 2014, reiterate the compliance dangers of helping employees obtain individual health insurance coverage. Provided by the IRS Office of Chief Counsel, the letters respond to constituent inquiries from two members of Congress, and references IRS positions on individual plans. Letters
