Annual Save Popponesset Bay dinner

On Thursday evening, July 10, at the Popponesset Inn, we held our annual dinner. Over 125 supporters attended, greeted friends and neighbors, old and new, enjoyed the dinner, auction and a special presentation by Woods Hole Group described below.

We are grateful to this year's primary dinner sponsor, Bosun's Marine. Bosun's, along with New Seabury Real Estate and New Seabury Marina has provided significant and long standing support over the years for which we are truly grateful.

We are also grateful to all of our individual financial supporters and the many companies and individuals who donated auction items for the dinner. Although SPB is an all-volunteer, 501 c 3 organization, financial contributions from our friends and neighbors are vital for us to fulfill our mission to keep the waterways safe and navigable in and around Popponesset Bay and to maintain the Popponesset Spit, an endangered species habitat. Thank you to all of our contributors!!

Presentation by Woods
Hole Group on the Future of the Spit

We had a very interesting presentation by Woods Hole Group (WHG). We hired them to perform an alternatives analysis related to the future outlook for the Popponesset Spit and Bay. With increasingly severe storm activity and rising sea levels, we hired WHG, an industry-leading coasting engineering firm, to evaluate what options are available to us to ensure the Spit and Bay remain intact and serve their purpose for years to come.

We will make their PowerPoint presentation and relevant parts of the report available on our website, www.savepopponessetbay.org. We welcome all feedback from those who attended the dinner and viewed the presentation.

Preparing the Spit for Summer

At the end of June, we reinstated the symbolic string fencing similar to that which Audubon erects annually. We re-posted the signs asking people to stay in the paths and out of the dune grass. We re-posted some of the signs that were down along the narrow channel at the foot of Popponesset Island regarding the safe areas to swim and where to beach boats.

About SPB
Save Popponesset Bay is a 501 c 3 all-volunteer organization founded in 1987.  Its current mission is to:
  1. Preserve, protect and restore the Popponesset spit
  2. Maintain open navigation channels into and out of Nantucket Sound
  3. Keep the waters in and around Popponesset safe and navigable and preserve and protect the Popponesset Spit as an endangered species habitat and registered barrier beach.
Through generous private donations, SPB is able to take the appropriate actions to ensure the stability of the Spit and navigability of the waters around the Popponesset Bay, including maintaining the required permitting with the federal, state and town authorities, as well as maintaining strong partnerships with like-minded organizations.
