Thanksgiving
Sail Boat Lighting

Join the Bright Coves neighborhood on the Friday after Thanksgiving Day -  before dusk - on Bright Coves Way (block party) to watch the holiday lighting of the (Petersons') sailboat in Spoondrift Cove.   Food and drink and a fire pit starting at dusk. Last year we had 60-70 people join to kick off the holiday season!

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

As hurricane season is winding down in New England, we are thankful that we've had a relatively calm season.  As we have seen with the devastation from the typhoon in the Philippines, hurricanes can inflict severe damage; it's been just over a year since Tropical Storm Sandy caused extensive damage
to the Popponesset Spit and washovers into Popponesset Bay.   After repairing the Spit last winter and spring, and dredging the Popponesset channel from Popponesset Creek to the Bay, we are very relieved that we will not face that magnitude of crisis this off-season.

And actually, we're moving from hurricane season into holiday season.  One of the best events in our holiday season among SPB supporters is the sailboat lighting (by the Peterson family) in Spoondrift Cove at dusk on the day after Thanksgiving.   We have gathered for this block party for the past five years.  For those celebrating Thanksgiving here, it's a great way to see Bright Coves and Popponesset Island friends and neighbors before winter.  If you want to join, please come on over around dusk.  Many people bring food and drink and we'll have tables set up and a fire pit going as we get ready to watch the sailboat in the Cove light up the evening.

Chances are if you receive this newsletter, you know that Save Popponesset Bay, Inc. is an all-volunteer 501 c 3 that works to keep the waterways in and around Popponesset Bay safe and navigable.   We also work to maintain the Popponesset Spit, an endangered species habitat and barrier beach.  Your contributions help us be prepared to respond after damaging events like last year's tropical storm.  Among our recurring expenses is the maintenance of SPB's local, state and federal permits to dredge the channel at the foot of Popponesset Island -- and our permits to repair the Spit after damaging events like Hurricane Sandy.

We appreciate the contributions from our friends and neighbors.  Your support helps us continue to the work to support the quality of life here.

We hope to see you on the afternoon of Friday, November 29 on Bright Coves Way!

About SPB
Save Popponesset Bay is a 501 c 3 all-volunteer organization founded in 1987.  Its current mission is to:
  1. Preserve, protect and restore the Popponesset spit
  2. Maintain open navigation channels into and out of Nantucket Sound
  3. Keep the waters in and around Popponesset safe and navigable and preserve and protect the Popponesset Spit as an endangered species habitat and registered barrier beach.
Through generous private donations, SPB is able to take the appropriate actions to ensure the stability of the Spit and navigability of the waters around the Popponesset Bay, including maintaining the required permitting with the federal, state and town authorities, as well as maintaining strong partnerships with like-minded organizations.
