We need your help today
Last year, Sustainable Sanctuary presented programs to over 400 congregation leaders and members AND helped over 60 congregations to deepen their efforts on behalf of the Earth.
But our work is far from done, and we couldn't do any of it without the financial support of people like you who love the planet.
Please make a donation today. It's easy--just click here:
Thank you so much!
PS: Now is the perfect time to donate because every dollar you give will be matched by the Shumaker Family Foundation.

Would Jesus Be an Environmentalist?
by Carol Meyer, Executive Director
The bracelet slogan, WWJD, popularized the notion of asking what Jesus would do in va
rious situations. I think it's worth pondering what his response might be to the critical issue of caring for the Earth were he in the flesh today.
Because environmental degradation wasn't a big problem in his day, it appears that Jesus said very little about the human relationship to the natural world. But we can certainly make some assumptions based on his values, teachings, and actions. Read more...

A message from SSC President, Rev. Dwight Tawney, Village Presbyterian Church
It's happening now. Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course. Our climate is changing, the earth is warming, and the chances for ecosystems to adapt naturally are diminishing. Awareness of these issues is inspiring many faith communities to become more informed and transformed environmental stewards. Cognizant of how much human societies continue to derive their life and nurturance from the rich but fragile diversity of our living environment, people of faith are more involved than ever in "greening" all areas of their community's life. Helpful Tips for Greener Holidays
Did you know that between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day, the average homeowner generates 25% more landfill waste than during the rest of the year?
Or, that if all conventional holiday lights in the US were replaced with LED lights, the annual energy savings would power almost 200,000 homes for an entire year?
Find out more and pick up some helpful tips about how you can do your part this Holiday Season at this website: Greening your Winter Holidays
Here's another great resource from the Audubon Society: Audubon's Tips for Greening Your Holidays.
Idea: Spread the word by printing copies of this flier from Audubon and handing them out to your congregation.

After hearing from Dr. Robert Martin about three biblical-theological models for engaging your congregation in environmentalism and receiving practical preaching advice from Rev. Tom Are, the audience was challenged to take a concrete step by committing to participate in SSC's 100 Sermons for the Earth initiative. Read more...

Reflection on the SSC Clergy Workshop
by Beth Sonneville, M.Sc., M.Div.
The subject of climate change is a risky topic in many venues but Sustainable Sanctuary Coalition was not so timid. A few weeks ago, it sponsored a clergy workshop, Too Hot to Handle? Biblical Tools for Preaching in an Age of Climate Change and 31 area clergy and laypersons showed up to hear the message. Read more...
