William Schneider's painting "Queen of Hearts" won the Holbein Award at the Pastel Society of America's 40th Annual Open Juried Pastel Exhibition held from September 4 through September 29, 2012. William described the creation of the painting this way: "Marci, my model for the session, was sitting, waiting for me to finish laying out my paint. She suddenly glanced up at my north light windows with the most beatific expression on her face. I shouted 'Don't move' and began the painting. Her pose made me think of all the Renaissance paintings of Saints in contemplation."

William Schneider's "Russian Oligarch" was awarded Second Place - Signature Members in the Oil Painters of America Summer 2012 Online Showcase. The judge was Don Dernovich.

Does William Schneider Win Everything?

It does seem like everything he enters, he wins.  He is our vote to be the next living Master artist.  There are only 50 living Masters.  We represent 6 of the 50.  I highly recommend starting to collect his work now.

BoJanglesMr. Bo Jangles' Column™
(This is the best part)

My Mom thinks I'm a dog.  Now, I'm clearly not a dog but I just can't get this through to her.  She keeps putting me in the back of the car with the dog.  Why would I want to ride with the dog?  This makes no sense to me so I jump over the seat and get in the back seat, like any dignified being.  Sometimes I even get in the kid car seat.  I am a kid afterall.  I really love my Mom but sometimes she just doesn't get me!  She's spent one too many hours in the gallery!

  SequoiaSequoia's Column

I have been very busy.  I started at a new school which I love.  It's our rainy season so I have a new raincoat and rain boots which makes it so much fun to stomp in puddles.

I'm very excited for Christmas because I am getting presents.  I keep looking out the door to see if Christmas is there but he never is.  I have even stopped by my friend's, Chris, and that doesn't seem to help either.  I really want a police car so I hope Christmas hurries up.  Mom says Christmas is taking it's sweet ol' time like every year.  Hmmm.  That hasn't stopped me from waking Mom up every day at 3 AM to check though!

Fun and Interesting Facts About Carmel-by-the-Sea

I finally am letting my DaDa write a column too.  He loves Carmel-by-the-Sea so it seems appropriate that he writes about it.

What is a Comstock house?

Carmel-by-the-Sea is world-renowned for many, many things but among the most famous are the cottages and flowers. Many of the original cottages from the early 1900's remain today. The most famous little cottages are known as Comstock Cottages. Hugh Comstock and his wife lived here at the time. Hugh's wife collected and made Otsy Totsy dolls. Her collection was so immense that it began to fill the home in which the Comstock's lived. Hugh had a great idea in 1920...build a doll house for his wife's dolls...and so they did. They built a little cottage, about 500 square feet in size, with no plans.  They moved all of his wife's dolls into The Doll House, as it was named. The dolls were carefully placed and displayed in the windows. His wife absolutely loved it and, as legend has it, she enjoyed her afternoon tea with her collection of Otsy Totsy dolls in The Doll House.

So popular did this little house become that other people in town asked Hugh to build them one...and so he did. By 1929 Hugh had built 22 "Comstock Cottages" in Carmel-by-the-Sea. The Doll House is located on Torres, just behind Bruno's Market and the Best Western. It is now known as the Hansel House and faces sideways on the property. Next door is the Gretel House, also a Comstock.

Most of the Comstock Cottages are privately owned but there are a few that are well-known businesses. The Tuck Box on Dolores is an original Comstock as is The Cottage of Sweets on Ocean. A Great Place for the Home and Garden is the largest Comstock and located directly behind The Tuck Box on Dolores.

Thanks to our friends at City Hall these magnificent cottages have been preserved for everyone to see and enjoy.
