Beltane Reborn
| |
|

The greatest celebrations held by the ancient Celts were based on nature and the changing seasons. The reason is that nothing else held (or still holds) more control or power over daily life. Nowadays some of those same celebrations have evolved into other holidays, such as Yule into Christmas and Samhain into Halloween. The remaining slowly shrunk over time, only recently gaining popularity with historians, Wiccans, Pagans, and Druids. Beltane falls under the latter category.
Beltane was the major holiday which announced the shift from darkness (winter) to light (spring). It honors the planting and growing of new crops, fertility and the return of long days and plenty of sunshine. Celebrations included great fires to burn the old and welcome the new; they were also used for cleansing rituals. It was a time for birth, marriages, divorce (i.e. to begin fresh). Feasts, fairs and games were common within the large and long celebrations. Some festivities included fertility dances around early maypoles, flower decorations, and hosting neighbors with your best food and drink.
When Christianity came to the British Isles, customs were appropriated and Beltane largely disappeared. Some remnants merged into May Day, a typically small spring celebration held in a few countries. The maypoles remained, along with the idea of celebrating the arrival of spring- although similar ideas from other cultures also blended into May Day.
In recent decades many communities around the world have begun returning Beltane to its rightful place as the official welcoming of spring and summer. In 1988, the city of Edinburgh began their annual Beltane Fire Festival. Each tear since thousands gather, not to recreate ancient practices but to honor our ancestors and nature itself. This is the largest Beltane celebration in the world, with smaller events now held all over the world. Some are by religious groups, while others are run by Celtic enthusiasts or historical groups. No matter the type or location of the current celebrations, their main goals are celebrating the magic, beauty and fun of life and nature in all its forms!

New York's Meadery of the Year
| |
|
by Niagara Celtic sponsor Black Willow Winery

This past June, Black Willow Winery's meadery, Valhalla Meadery, was named "2015 Meadery of the Year" by the New York International Wine Competition (NYIWC). The competition saw at least 1,000 submissions from the United States and over 30 countries from all over the world. This award speaks volumes for the quality of the mead produced by the winery.
Each bottle's artwork pays homage to Norse mythology on their labels.
Odin's Nectar, a traditional semi-dry honey-wine which pairs best with spicy foods and mild, buttery cheeses, has been rated a prestigious 90 points and earned silver and bronze awards in 2015. The two infused meads the winery produces are a favorite for those with a sweeter side. Freja's Passion, a traditional honey-wine infused with strawberry and vanilla flavors, is named after the Norse goddess of war, death & wealth, and has earned silver medals from the American Wine Society and New York Wine & Food Classic in 2015. Valkyrie's Lure, named after the mythical Nose women who claimed fallen warriors for Odin after battle, is the winery's very popular pear and cinnamon infused mead. The brew has won a double gold from the American Wine Society and several silver and bronze awards. With a subtle rich sweetness, the mead pairs well with creamy cheeses and pork entrees.
