January 2015

Happy New Year! We've started off 2015 on a high-note, as our fund drive continues to be supported by new donors each week. Every little bit helps us to host the best possible 15th heritage festival this September.

We have big news and plans underway for this entire year, but first up is the announcement of our Hogmanay Raffle Winners. They will be announced in a few days..good luck to all our donors!

Celebrating Robert Burns
The Basics of a January Tradition

Celebrated around Robert Burns' birthday, January 25th, Burns Suppers honor the Bard, and range from very formal gatherings to celebratory parties. Most Suppers however fall somewhere in the middle, a wonderful hosted evening including time honored traditions: a Scottish meal including Haggis, drinking Scotch whisky, and recitation of works by, about, and in the spirit of the beloved Scottish poet. There's always plenty of music and dancing as well!

If you haven't attended a Burns Supper before, this Scottish tradition may at first seem to be a stuffy or droll evening. Guests will happily disagree! The events always include wonderful food and drink, friendly people, wonderful entertainment, all while learning about Scottish culture in a unique way. What's more, local Burns Suppers fall on the same night as others held around the world, so you'll be celebrating at the same moment as thousands of others.

Every Burns Supper has its own special form and flavor, which makes attending different ones each year a wonderful delight. If you're interested in giving one a try, you'll find three local Burns Suppers in the left column of this email. But hurry...seats are limited and the deadline to reserve tickets is coming fast.
Society News
From the Board of the Niagara Celtic Heritage Society

We would like to extend our best wishes to two of our dedicated board members who've resigned this year. Diana and Tim Straube, who remain devoted volunteers of our festival, have dedicated many hours over the years to help bring the society where it is today. The entire board are deeply grateful for their time with us and thank them for contributions!

We would also like to announce the return of Rebecca Schweigert to our board. Rebecca remains an invaluable member of the festival staff, and we're thrilled that she is once again joining us as a board member as we enter our 15th year.

As always, we look forward to continuing our mission of keeping Celtic Heritage alive in Western New York for many years to come.
