 St. Patrick's Fun Facts

- There are seven places in the United States named after the shamrock, Ireland's floral emblem, including Shamrock Lakes, IN & Shamrock, OK.
- There are 34.7 million U.S. residents with Irish ancestry. This number is more than seven times the population of Ireland itself.
- The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in the United States on March 17, 1762, when Irish soldiers serving in the English military marched through New York City.
- On St. Patrick's Day, over 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed around the world.
- Many legends and myths surround St. Patrick. Some of this lore includes the belief that he raised people from the dead.
- The original color of St. Patrick was not green, but blue! It was during the 19th century that green came to be used as a symbol for Ireland.
