Green Light for the Green Line Extension

This past Tuesday, I attended the groundbreaking ceremony to kick off construction for Phase 1 of the long-awaited Green Line Extension (GLX). Phase of the GLX project includes the reconstruction of the Medford Street bridge in Somerville and the Harvard Street bridge in Medford. Such improvements will allow both Commuter Rail and Green Line trains to use the bridges - an essential first step.

This groundbreaking is a testament to the hard work of my elected colleagues and all the community advocates in Somerville, for continuously prioritizing this long-awaited project. The beginning of construction demonstrates that the Green Line Extension is happening, and will keep Somerville's economic development plans on track, while providing overdue environmental justice and transportation equity to our city.

El Sistema Somerville Visit & Upcoming Concert

 El Sysema

On Wednesday, November 7, I attended a very special performance by  the orchestra of El Sistema Somerville,, an afterschool music program for third and fourth grade students based at the East Somerville Community School. I had attended their first concert performance in September, and was  extremely impressed by their progress. The excellent program director Diane Cline, has recruited devoted musicians from the community to help these young people master their instruments.

El Sistema  Somerville is establishing a "Concert Closet," to help students "look as good as they sound," as Ms. Cline says. You can help grow the El Sistema Concert Closet by donating  gently worn, concert-appropriate  clothing for the use of these young Somerville musicians. If you are interested in making a clothing donation to El Sistema (dresses, dark slacks, white dress shirts, and black dress shoes) please contact Ms. Cline at 617-625-6600 ext. 6388, or dcline@k12.somerville.ma.us.

If you are interested in supporting - or just hearing - El Sistema Somerville, please join me in attending their upcoming "Community in Harmony" concert this Tuesday, December 18, featuring a performance of the "Hallelujah Chorus;" East Somerville Community School at Edgerly, 8 Bonair St., at 7 p.m.

If you take a couple of minutes to watch this video, it will make your day. It may transform the way you see the world. It will help you appreciate the mission of El Sistema Somerville, too.

Pakistani Delegation Visit to the State House

Pakistani visit

For the second year in a row, I was delighted to host a visiting delegation of Pakistani government officials at the State House; to tour the building, learn about our history, and engage in ia lively discussion of government and public policy. These visitors have been coming to Massachusetts under a US State Department grant awarded to the Massachusetts Municipal Association (MMA) and the Institute for Training and Development (ITD), of Amherst, MA,.This group consisted of 15 Pakistani government officials, eight of them women, from regional, and national government. The program's purpose is professional development training, including "attachments" to city and town halls, to learn about best practices in government operations. Three of these visitors - all womwn - had their local government "attachment" to the City of Somerville.
