Helping Others

In late November one of my favorite motivational speakers passed away at the age of 86. Zig Ziglar lived an "outstanding life that only got better every day." His positivity, enthusiasm, and leadership skills sharpened the minds of many, including myself. I am grateful for the opportunity I had to hear him speak in person one time. His numerous stories that were always driven home by solid, memorable quotes left a lasting impression on my daily thoughts and internal drives. Practically every sentence that he spoke could instantly be put into quotations and applied to everyone's life, but for now, I'd like to focus on one of my favorites:
"You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want."
What better time of year could there be than now to live by this powerful statement? Zig definitely lived his life exactly how he wanted to by impacting the lives of many. What about you? What was the last thing you did for someone else? When was the last time you helped another person reach a milestone in their life, or better yet, their day?
Sometimes the simplest of things, just like Zig's quotes, can mean so much to others. Try holding the door open for the person who is still 20 feet behind you today and watch them smile as they realize a stranger is offering a gesture of kindness. Go out of your way to learn 3 new things about your co-workers. See what drives them to perform. Maybe you can help inspire them to reach their level of greatness. No matter what you do, just place an emphasis on doing something for others everyday this month.
My teammates and I at Funktional Fitness are blessed with the opportunity to help others on a daily basis. Often times people think exercising is just to attain physical goals such as losing weight and putting on muscle. This is a big component of what we do, but there is so much more. The opportunities we have to help people emotionally and spiritually far out weigh any of the benefits that can be noticed superficially. I want to thank each and every one of you for these opportunities to do what we enjoy doing. You give us the chance to display and follow our passion every time you walk in to the studio to train, every time you send us an email or ask us a question, every time you share what we do with others, and of course every time you read your monthly newsletter. J
Thank you for helping me get what I want in life, but thank you even more for blessing the lives of others by helping them get what they want. With the Holiday season upon us, I challenge you to help even more. I challenge you to see how many other lives you can impact. How many blessings can you share? Remember, the smallest of actions go a long way in the lives of many.
Last month gave us the opportunity to be thankful for all we have on a daily basis. This month is all about the impressions you can leave on the lives of others. Thank you Zig for the impressions you left on me, and thank you for challenging me to leave those same impressions on others. Even though it's been years since I saw him in person, I can still hear his voice, "You will get all you want in life, if you help enough other people get what they want."

December 1st: TOY DRIVE. Toys must be new and unwrapped. Help us give back this holiday season and make this Christmas extra special for a group of local children!
December 8th: Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga! Take some time to come soothe your mind, body & soul after a long week. Join Yogi Cassandra every 2nd Saturday of the month at 11AM for this 90-minute class. $5 donations appreciated. Open to the public, all non-members welcome.
December 11th: Nutrition University: "Everything you need to know about Nutrition Labels." Coach Paige discusses what to look for, ingredients to avoid, and how to make smart purchasing decisions. Starts at 7pm and is open to the public and FREE of charge.
December 20th: Nutrition University: Carbohydrates 101. Join Coach Paige as she provides an interactive way to learn about one of your most important macronutrients. Starts at 6pm and is open to the public and FREE of charge.
December 24th: Santa's Sleigh Ride workout at 9am. One last chance to burn off some holiday calories and have some fun with your FunkFit family. This workout is open to all members and their friends and/or family members. Toy donations for the TOY DRIVE are encouraged.
December 25th: FUNKFIT CLOSED for the holiday.
December 31st: New Years Eve Last Chance Workout at 9am. Come Finish 2012 Strong! Again, please bring all of your friends and family members to enjoy your last workout for 2012.
**Clients/members who have been participating in the winter challenge can weigh-in today through the 4th and winners will be announced the following week.

Unfortunately, this December Funkfit will be losing 2 of it's Coaches. Both Lauren Owens and Leigh Adams will be embarking upon new journeys at this point in time during their lives. Lauren is moving back to the Virgina/Washington DC area to enroll back in school in pursuit of a career as a professional Strength and Conditioning Coach. Her energy and enthusiasm will truly be missed. Leigh (aka 5AM drill sergeant) and his wife recently had their first child and his early morning commitments have changed as he is now both a husband and a father. His dedication and ability to "wake" everyone up during their early workouts will be missed as well.
FunkFit wishes all the best to both Lauren and Leigh as they begin the next chapter in their lives and are super appreciative and grateful for all they have done during their time here. They have truly left an imprint on the lives of many as well as their fellow teammates.
A BIG THANK YOU AND FUNKFIT HUG FROM ALL OF US!

Harvest Blend Salad with Winter Squash
Ingredients:
2 Serving size
1/2 cup chicken broth
1/4 cup balsamic vinegar
1 lb boneless skinless chicken breast 1 TBS Extra virgin olive oil Seasoned salt Cubed acorn/butternut/winter squash
1 tsp pepper
2 tsp. salt
Roasted pumpkin seeds
4 Thinly sliced prosciutto or bacon
Dried cranberries Balsamic vinaigrette 50/50 blend salad mix
2 oz Goat cheese
Directions:
Mix together vinegar and broth in a plastic bag. Add chicken and marinate 1hr to overnight. Place marinated chicken on 1 side of the baking sheet, drizzle with 2 tsp olive oil and sprinkle with 1 tsp seasoned salt. Toss acorn squash on the other side and drizzle with 1 tsp olive oil, sprinkle salt and pepper over. Bake at 375 for 16 min turning chicken and squash over halfway through. Remove chicken and continue cooking squash for another 15 min. Brown thinly sliced prosciutto or bacon in the skillet for 3-4 minutes, until crispy. Dice chicken and add to salad along with sprinkling crumbled prosciutto, cranberries, pumpkin seeds, balsamic vinaigrette, and goat cheese over; place acorn squash to the side. Enjoy!!
