That's What Friends Are For
By Jeremy Jones
I was recently blessed to go on a wonderful vacation that included a first time trip to Miami and a first time trip on a cruise. Although several of the original plans changed because of Tropical Storm/Hurricane Isaac, the trip was definitely one of the more memorable ones I've been on because no matter what elements changed, my buddy and I made the most of it and had an outstanding time. The fact that I had one of my best friends since the 7th grade there with me far outweighed any of the obstacles the storm created. Having a friend with you always makes things more enjoyable, especially when it comes to working out.
During the month of September at Funktional Fitness, we are celebrating friends with our "Bring a Buddy" program. If you, or someone you know, have been facing your own personal "storms" when it comes to your health and fitness goals, or even your overall well-being, now is the time to take advantage of having someone with you to battle the elements. Here are 3 reasons why teaming up with a friend can help both of you reach your goals in an efficient manner.
- Accountability: When there are two of you, you are not only accountable to yourself, but you are also accountable to your friend. We all have those days where we don't feel like working out, but that's where your buddy comes in to play because neither of you wants to let each other down. All it takes is a simple phone call or maybe kick in the butt and the chances of both of you making your workout are much higher than not having an accountability partner. The same is true when it comes to nutrition. If you are working toward common goals, it's great to have someone there making sure both of you stay on track when it comes to the foods you are putting into your body.
- Encouragement: When you reach milestones or accomplish new goals, it's great to be recognized for your tremendous efforts. Whether it's the smallest of feats, or month to year-long aspirations, when you have a friend by your side, he or she is there with you, and you with them, encouraging each other every step of the way. Often times it is tough to recognize our own efforts, but those around us do. Their little words of encouragement can go a long way when it comes to helping you reach your goals, and of course returning the favor increases the likelihood of both of you feeling great and living a healthier lifestyle.
- Fun: One of the best ways to accomplish anything is to have fun along the way. When you have a friend right by your side, you both get to endure the kettlebell swings or the pushups. You are there with each other keeping the workouts stimulating, and of course, having a good laugh along the way helps each other to finish the workout too. On a side note, laughing actually activates quite a few of your core muscles so you and your training partner can be getting twice the amount of work in! So for your next workout grab a friend and drag them with you so both of you can truly enjoy a good butt kickin with a smile on your face.
Don't waste any more time. Find your accountability partner who is going to fill you with encouragement and make things fun while both of you work toward being a healthier individual. No matter what storms you face, two is better than one, and even if Mother Nature alters your plans, with each other's friendship and determination you can defeat any obstacle in your way.

How did you find Funktional Fitness? I found Funkfit online, I was looking for something besides a chain gym and discovered funkfit. I stopped by and had a walk through of a typical workout and loved it. How has FunkFit changed your life? I am now much more active and find myself with a lot more energy throughout the day What specific results or goals have you attained? I had a goal to get down to 200lbs before my 30th birthday. How have the Fitness Coaches contributed to your accomplishments? The fitness coaches helped with encouragement during the workouts and various tips for healthier eating. What was your favorite thing about your last GroupFit session and what time do you normally attend? Working out in a group setting is more motivating then working out in pairs or alone. I normally attend the 6AM class. If someone out there were thinking about joining the GroupFit program what would you say? I would highly recommend it. The trainers are very flexible to different fitness levels and will work with your specific needs. |

How did you find Funktional Fitness?
Drove by; I live in the neighborhood
How has FunkFit changed your life?
Having the availability of the 5am training allows me to get my exercise in before my day starts so I have no reason to ever miss a workout. I've been able to establish a routine that fits with my work schedule. Each group fit class is different so I feel I get work on the entire body. That combined with the personal training I get with Joe twice a week to work on getting my ankle and foot back in shape is getting me closer to being able to run again.
What specific results or goals have you attained? How has your Fitness Coach contributed to your accomplishments?
I suffered an injury to my ankle in December. Before then my free time revolved around hiking trips and running. With the injury came a walking boot for 6 months. When the boot was finally removed there was still pain and physical therapy. I was told no running or jumping but I had to do something so I signed up for personal training. The only time that works for me is 5am because of my work schedule so Joe drew the short straw and got paired with me. While I was going through physical therapy he focused more on strength and toning. He started me out slowly taking the time to assess the situation. He would always ask how the foot was feeling and he kept an eye on my face looking for the pain. I'm a little stubborn. Once he figured out what was OK and what gave me trouble he started pushing me a little more each time; tailoring the exercises so I could perform them even with the injury. Now that my foot is in the final stages of recovery he's starting to mix in some items that require more balancing and use of the injured foot and ankle to help strengthen it. He's getting me outside to help me figure out my gait so I can get back to running and hiking more often. I've been with Joe for 3 months and I was able to run a mile and take my first hike in 8 months, I give him all the credit for paying attention and being patient. He's much more patient with this then I am and because of him I feel like I'm on my way back.
What was your favorite thing about your last private training session?
The slide board; it makes me laugh.
Tell us something you've learned during your training sessions and apply to your everyday life.
Be patient with my injury. It's hard for me to do this but when I'm thinking I want to go run I hear Joe's voice, I think bad things about him but then I stop myself from pushing before I'm ready.
If someone out there were thinking about joining FunkFit what would you say? I would tell them I love it for multiple reasons. The group fit isn't the same every day, You can actually get to know people here instead of just being one of many, the personal trainers are awesome and make you feel more like a friend then a client, all the trainers are great and watch you to make sure you're doing the exercises properly.
Tell the FunkFit community a goal you are striving to attain?
First goal: 1 Funk lap. I'll eventually do another ½ marathon.....

Hello and welcome all you FUNKFITTERS!!
Something you may not know about me is that I am loud and full of energy (ok maybe you knew that already). Well I will let you in on my secret. Are you ready...? I LOVE MY JOB! When I discovered I could make a career out of helping people transform their lives I was hooked. With that said, it wasn't too long ago that Luis and Jeremy decided I could do more to help. They quickly asked me to charge ahead and take lead in a second position at the studio. Enter the New Director of Sales and Marketing! I have a strong background in customer service and sales. After all, waiting tables for many years you learn to communicate effectively with all types of individuals.
So what does that mean for you? One thing you can expect is a lot of new activities and opportunities for current and future members and clients. September is great example of what the future has to hold. We've got 4 weeks of specialty clinics and some great new educational workshops. The biggest thing I am pumped up for is our very own 5K! Since we are a local business, there is a strong desire to get involved with the community. This is exciting because it's close to home - located at Freestone park the 5k will be a very family oriented event. Kids, dogs, husbands, and wives; all people of all ages of all different activity levels are welcome. And what better way to rap up the race then with our Annual Anniversary party back at the studio.
Like any positive growth in life comes change. Bare with us while we iron out the wrinkles as we charge forward in this exciting new time. I am here for you. SERIOUSLY the more I can get to know you and what your needs are the more I can mold our business to fit those needs. If there is something you want Funktional Fitness to get involved in our if you have an idea for something feel free to put it in our innovation box located at the front desk
I look forward to seeing you around the studio and as always CARPE DIEM (seize the day)!

By Brendon Burchard
On a dark and steamy Caribbean night, Brendon Burchard stood bleeding atop the crumpled hood of his wrecked car. That night he learned about mortality, discovering that at the end of our lives we will all ask, "Did I live? Did I love? Did I matter?"
Since that fateful night, Brendon has lived a fully charged life, and he's helped millions of people around the globe transform their lives and feel more alive, engaged, and fulfilled. Brendon observes that the emotional energy of the world has flatlined, and he sets out to fix it. People are stressed, restless, and wanting more out of life. Despite the fact that most people have what they "need" to be happy, they rarely feel the levels of excitement, engagement, or satisfaction they deserve. So what's the solution?
In The Charge, Brendon argues that the only way to measurably improve the quality of your life is to learn how to activate the very 10 drives that make you most human. These drives are your desires for more control, competence, congruence, caring, connection, change, challenge, creative expression, contribution, and consciousness. These drives shape everything you think, feel, and do in life, so understanding and mastering them is critical to your success and happiness. Strategically activating these drives on a consistent basis is the fastest path to living a fully charged life.
Harnessing our human drives is not easy; if it were, we wouldn't see so much restlessness in the world. That's why Brendon has devised what he calls the true "activators" of human experience-a series ofpowerful yet simple actions you can take to radically increase your levels of energy, engagement, and fulfillment in all areas of your life.
What Brendon uncovers in The Charge will surprise and challenge you. It turns out that most of the ways we seek to meet our human drives are actually counterproductive. We all want more control, for example, but seeking to have more certainty in our daily lives or to control other people will actually decrease our levels of control (and happiness). We have a deep desire for change, too, but we often fail to make the right kinds of change that would make us feel more alive and in command of our lives.
In The Charge, Brendon helps us overcome these mistakes and illuminates the path for strategically and intelligently activating our 10 human drives so that we can have the one thing we all want: more life in our lives! Brendon Burchard is the founder of High Performance Academy and author of the #1 New York Times and #1 USA Today bestselling book The Millionaire Messenger. He is also the author ofLife's Golden Ticket and one of the top motivation and high performance trainers in the world. His famous training events and videos inspire millions of people to find their charge, share their voice, and make a greater difference.
