Youth Summit
Focusing on Making Disciples

Bishop Benhase charged the first Youth Summit for the Diocese to assess everything we do for youth by how it assists us in making disciples for Jesus. Whether something is working or needs improving is based on how well we are meeting that core objective. With that clear purpose in mind, Diocesan Council and the 30 additional stakeholders in diocesan youth programs began work this past Saturday in a meeting convened at St. Anne's, Tifton. First up was a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) Analysis. This revealed a lot of strengths, but some clear challenges and room for improvement.

null As Council adjourned at lunchtime, the thirty stakeholders in the diocesan youth programs continued as the adults and teens worked to create a four-part plan of action: 1) Name a Youth Task Force to oversee the ongoing work of following up from the conversation, 2) Create a online bulletin board to facilitate a conversation on each of the existing programs, 3) Enhance and expand communications to youth and adults about youth programs, and 4) Add means of engaging congregations and potential youth and adults more fully with diocesan youth programs.

Youth Task Force

The immediate follow up will be gathering nominations for the Youth Task Force and setting up a communications committee. Nominations of adults and teens are needed by October 1 to a special Youth Task Force to be named by the Bishop. The Task Force will be made up of adults and teens from each of the six convocations of the Diocese. The group is charged with: 1) Working on a job description for the Diocesan Youth Commission which will be the successor group, and 2) Assessing each of the current diocesan youth programs based on input from a survey of all stakeholders including teen participants, parents, youth ministers, and clergy.  Youth Task Force Nomination Form (interested persons may nominate themselves). Final selection will be completed by the diocesan staff in consultation with adults who work with youth.

Diocesan Community Update

The Search Committee of Christ Church, Valdosta, has listed today that congregation's call for a rector on a church-wide database. They will be receiving names through December 1. The Parish Profile is online here: http://www.christchurchvaldosta.org/?page_id=4395

Guice Hall Dedication Planned at Honey Creek

null On Sunday, October 6 at 5:30 p.m., Bishop Benhase will dedicate Guice Hall in thanksgiving for the contributions of Pam Guice and her family to the Diocese of Georgia as a whole and particularly to the Honey Creek Summer Camp Program. For decades, Pam was the foundation of the Summer Camp Program, serving as its director and guiding force. The building previously identified as Martha's Cottage is being renamed with the grateful thanks for the diocesan community. The diocesan community is invited to attend the dedication. If you would like to stay for dinner at Honey Creek, please call the office at 912-265-9218 to make a reservation and arrange to pay for the meal.

Diocesan Council Receives Audit, Approves Grant

The Diocesan Council heard a lot of good news in its meeting this past Friday and Saturday in Tifton. Most of the blessings were from excellent financial reports from auditors, the financial strength of Honey Creek and a solid 2014 budget process underway for 2014. The news is that we are using our very limited financial resources well.

Beyond this, Council unanimously approved a nearly $250,000 request from the Episcopal Agency of Thomasville (EDAT) to be funded through the Campaign for Congregational Development. The funds are not available at present as Campaign money raised to date is already committed to projects underway. But the Council pre-authorized the funds to add its seal of approval to the project so that potential donors know the multi-church community development work being done by the three Thomasville Episcopal Churches-All Saints, Good Shepherd, and St. Thomas-is endorsed by Council.

Saturday's Council meeting concluded with the group working with stakeholders in our diocesan youth programs as the Youth Summit (reported on above) got underway. During that time, Council Members heard moving testimony from parents, teens and youth ministers about the benefits of our youth ministry. They also heard clear concerns about how the program can be improved. As the Youth Summit continued its detailed work, Council adjourned.

Bishop of Jerusalem to Visit Augusta

The Rt. Rev'd Suheil Dawani, fourteenth Anglican Bishop of Jerusalem will visit St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 605 Reynolds St., Augusta on Sunday, September 22. Bishop Dawani will speak to the Adult Forum at 10 a.m. speaking on the ministries of the Diocese throughout the Middle East. He will preach at the 11 a.m. worship service. Following the 11 service, there will be a reception to welcome the Bishop.

Bishop Dawani became the 14th Bishop of Jerusalem on April 15, 2007. Born in Nablus, West Bank in 1951, Bishop Dawani has served at St. George's Cathedral in Jerusalem, St. Andrew's in Ramallah and St. Peter's, Bir Zeit, the West Bank. Throughout his ministry the Bishop has been involved in ecumenical work. He has helped organize summer camps for Muslim and Christian children. As Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Dawani is the Chief Pastor of the 27 parishes spread throughout the five political regions of Israel, Palestine, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon.   He is also Chairman of the Board of each of more than thirty institutions of education and healthcare.   The diocesan schools, hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation and vocational training centers provided the best possible services while reaching out to assist those who cannot afford to pay for services and strengthening the Christian presence in the region.

In a multicultural, multi-faith, multi-ethnic diocese spread across five countries, the Rt. Rev'd Suheil Dawani is a strong advocate for peace and reconciliation. One of the thirteen recognized Heads of Churches in Israel, Bishop Dawani faithfully encourages leaders of the Churches to make every effort to strengthen the Christian Presence as a moderate and mediating Body in a region torn by anxiety and unrest.

Church "Program Year" Kicks Off

Like it or not, church life settles down a bit each summer and then gets kick started again in the fall. Below are a few photos from around the Diocese as the program year gets underway:

Deacon Matthew Lewis speaks with youth of the Church of the Good Shepherd, Augusta, meeting for their first class in the cottage.

Teachers and students give God the glory in a Sunday School class and Susan Tutan Gonzalez leads Children's Church in the undercroft, both at Christ Church Episcopal, Savannah.

Fall Gathering This Weekend

It's coming down to the wire, but you can still register through Thursday noon for this weekend's Fall Gathering. T-shirts have been ordered, so late participants will miss out on that, but otherwise registration is open. The Book of Common Prayer says that the ministry of all the baptized is to represent Christ and his Church bearing witness wherever we may be. This task would be impossible if it were not for Christ's working in and through us by the power of the Holy Spirit. Fall Gathering will explore this Mission Impossible with the Rev. Tar Drazdowski and Maggie Bloodworth working with our Missioner for Youth Elizabeth Burns.

Students in 6-12 grade should register now. The weekend is $106 for participants and as always scholarship assistance in available through our congregations and the Diocese. Register now online for Fall Gathering

New Beginnings

Our next New Beginnings weekend will be November 15-17, 2013. New Beginnings is a weekend retreat for teenagers in grades 7-9 led by a team of mostly teenagers, with a few adults, and two clergy spiritual directors. The weekend takes participants through a discovery about ourselves, our friends, our families, our faith, and how to live out our faith in our daily lives.

How might this discovery happen? Through making new friends and sharing with old ones, through singing, skits, talks given by teens, videos, games, worship, and conversation with each other! You are encouraged to bring friends from your church and an adult who will stay through the weekend. Everyone will take an active part in the program. You can go to New Beginnings as many times as you'd like...as long as you're in grades 7-9. We know once you go, you will want to go back. There is even an opportunity to serve on the team...you'll hear more about that at the weekend.
