We're surrounded by holiday cheer. But for some people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), the holidays can mean waiting and hoping for a kidney and/or worrying about what the future will bring.

I created Renal Support Network (RSN) in 1993. I was diagnosed with CKD at the age of two and have survived 40+ surgeries, 13 years of dialysis, and four kidney transplants. I'm so grateful to be here!

I knew that many people who had CKD felt isolated and alone and had given up hope. I coined the mottos "An illness is too demanding when you don't have hope" and "One friend can make the difference" to reflect my belief that we can still live joyfully despite having a chronic illness.

Our signature event-the RSN Annual Renal Teen Prom-is right around the corner. Hundreds of "kidney teens" converge on Southern California every January to experience the night of their dreams. RSN treats the teens to entertainment, dinner, glamour photos, and visits by Hollywood celebrities. Since 2000, the RSN Annual Renal Teen Prom has given these young people the opportunity to interact with their peers, some of whom will become lifelong friends.

Those of us with CKD realize that our lives depend on the health care we receive. The U.S. health care system is in a state of flux, and the combination of Medicare reforms, new health care policies, and "bundled" reimbursement has placed patients with CKD at the center of the public health care debate. RSN is there to help provide the patient's perspective.

Our goal of providing education, support, and hope to the millions of people with CKD has indeed been a joyful journey. We strive to help those who have kidney disease continue to live a full life that centers on the hope for a better tomorrow.

Giving is also key for people with CKD. Many of us have received a kidney from a friend, family member, or stranger-and we are truly thankful for this exceptional gift.

I ask you to consider participating in our mission by making a tax-deductible donation to RSN today in the amount of $20, $35, $50, $100, $200, or more to help us continue to engage people all across the United States.

RSN also has EmbraceHope Jewelry available at Etsy. Find a special gift and we will ship to them directly.

I thank you in advance on behalf of the people with CKD whom your donation will benefit.

Wishing you health, happiness, and hope always.
