Later this month, the House of Representatives will be considering a trade bill with some interesting language hiding under the surface. In effect, these bills make it a "principle negotiating objective" of the United States to discourage boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaigns in trade talks with the European Union and to encourage states to blacklist companies that support BDS as a form of peaceful advocacy.Later this month, the House of Representatives will be considering a trade bill with some interesting language hiding under the surface. In effect, these bills make it a "principle negotiating objective" of the United States to discourage boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) campaigns in trade talks with the European Union and to encourage states to blacklist companies that support BDS as a form of peaceful advocacy.

Here's what you need to know fast tracking trade agreements: broad parts of civic society and social justice advocacy movements oppose this legislation.

Of all four versions of these trade bills, the House version of the "customs bill" contains the most offensive anti-BDS language. It would require the President to report to Congress on BDS decisions made by foreign persons and require a foreign company operating in the United States to report on foreign individuals and institutions boycotting or divesting from the company. The BDS movement is one of the most effective ways of making a collective ethical voice heard. MFSA supports the work of the BDS movement in Israel/Palestine and was an early voice for BDS work during the apartheid struggle in South Africa.

Such legislation clearly puts profit before people and fast-tracks corporate rights before human rights.

And as people of faith, we know that Jesus, first and foremost, put the care of marginalized people before the needs of the empire.

That's why it's important for you to share your perspective with those decision-makers in Congress. Let them know that, as a person of faith, you stand firmly against fast-tracking legislation and related customs bills. Call your Representative. It takes less than 5 minutes and can help sway their vote. In fact, we'll provide a script for your convenience.

As a justice-seeking person of faith, your voice matters.
