"My 6 mo old german shepherd is extremely aggressive with other people (outside of the people in the household) as well as other dogs. we were advised to not have him around other dogs or outside too much in public until he had all of his shots. Because of this he has not been properly socialized. What can we do so that we are able to take our dog out without the aggression?"
This saddens me because it is totally preventable with proper and early Socialization. "The Primary and most important time for puppy socialization is the first three months of life."* This is why the AVSAB (American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior" believes and recommends that it should be the standard of care for puppies to receive such socialization before they are fully vaccinated.
It is during this 3 month period that sociability outweighs fear and thus offering a window for the puppy to adapt to new people, other animals, and experiences. Delayed or incomplete socialization can increase the risk of behavioral problems later in life such as fear, fear aggression and avoidance. Behavior problems are the number one cause of dogs being given up to shelters and are the number one cause of death for dogs under the age of three.
AVSAB state that puppies can start puppy socialization classes as early as 7 to 8 weeks of age. Puppies should have received a minimum of one set of vaccines at least 7 days prior to the first class and a first deworming and then kept up-to-date on vaccines throughout the class.
The Process of Puppy Socialization
Puppies should be handled and manipulated as early as possible. We should hold them touching every body part and getting them comfortable with being petted and restrained. Every effort should be made to expose them to as many people as possible, well-socialized animals, places, new environments and situations.
A very reputable breeder once told me that puppies should be introduced to 7 new things every day over 7 weeks. Excellent advice.
I currently offer 3 Puppy Programs that integrate Socialization into them.
