Nose Work Classes Coming in 2014
I just finished an 8 day Train the Trainers course in Nosework taught by Andrew Ramsey of Ramsey K9.
Andrew's system for training Nosework is both simple and highly effective. It blends concepts from the Military Working Dog Program with the use of a Clicker or verbal mark, reward based training and cooperative play, to form a very clear and effective communication system that avoids many of the pitfalls of traditional programs. The course taught us how to engage dogs in the game of search and how to motivate, handle, read and reward them in order to build a strong working partnership as well as a reliable Focused Response.
Besides working our own dogs Andrew provided a whole variety of dogs that had never done Nosework for us to train. The dogs ranged in age from 4 months to a Year. By the end of the training session all these dogs were working on odor only and were able to search and find odor in and out of the training lab. Andrew's system is very straight forward and systematic. Almost any dog can be taught to search using his approach. In 2014 I hope to start on-going Nosework training classes for people who want to compete with their dogs. The only thing that is currently holding me back is finding the right space to set up a training lab. This is were I need your help. I am looking for a space that is about 500 to 750 square feet. I prefer to locate in Oakland, San Leandro or Castro Valley but would consider other areas. It could be a sublet in a commercial area, a small store front or someone's storage area. If you have any ideas or leads please contact me. I am offering a finders fee to the person who directs me to the right space. I'll keep you all informed and hopefully I can start classes soon.
