*Fad 1 and FAD 2 - Family Advocacy (social skills/recreational)
Agency: WJCS Autism Center

Age Range: 8th - 12th grades

Description: FAMILY ADVOCACY (FAD) is a social, recreational, skills-based group for adolescents on the autism spectrum and their families.  Meeting twice-monthly on Thursday evenings in a club-like format, participants engage in experiential activities planned to enhance social, recreational and independent living skills. Monthly professionally guided parent groups offer education, preparation for transition into the adult world, formal and informal supports, networking and problem-solving opportunities.

*Girls Night Out (social skills)

Age Range: 10-13
Description: Girls Night Out is a social club for girls 10 - 13 on the autistic spectrum. Girls will have the opportunity to socialize, meet new friends, and connect with others! Moms will be able to relax, socialize, and share experiences.

*Grandparent Support Group

Agency: WJCS Autism Center

Age Range: For grandparents of children with Autism 

Description: Monthly meetings are held to share experiences, provide mutual support, discuss resources and strategies concerning a variety of topics including behavior, family dynamic, recreation, and services.

*Healthy Relationships and Sexuality Group

Agency: WJCS 

Location: 141 North Central Avenue, Hartsdale, NY  

Age Range: teens and young adults 

Description: HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS AND SEXUALITY GROUP is a 10 week workshop for teens and young adults with developmental disabilities including autism. Groups are designed to help individuals understand their maturing bodies, safe expression of their feelings as sexual beings and reduce vulnerability and potential for exploitation. Several groups are being formed for the Fall 2013.

*Moving Forward (social/ recreational)

Age Range: 21+

Description: An informal social and recreational group for adults with developmental disabilities that meets weekly.

*Recreate and Relate (social/recreational)

Agency: WJCS and JCC on Hudson

Location: 371 S. Broadway, Tarrytown, NY  

Age Range: Teens

Description: RECREATE AND RELATE (R&R) is a twice-monthly Saturday afternoon social club for teens where they will have the opportunity to socialize over snack, make new friends and practice social skills in a supportive, fun environment! Each week, teens participate in structured recreational activities and social skill building. Activities will be determined with the group but will include time in the gym, Wii, air hockey, and board games. There will also be scheduled trips into the community. This group is run in collaboration with the JCC on the Hudson.

*Parent Management Training (PMT)

Agency: WJCS

Location: locations vary

Age Range: For parents of children on the autistic spectrum

Description: PMT is a 12 session evidence based parent behavior management training group. Parents will learn new ways to understand their child's behavior and will practice skills and techniques for effectively handling problem behaviors.

*Project Lifesaver 

Agency: WJCS Autism Center 

Location: 845 North Broadway White Plains, NY 

Age Range: Children - Adults who have a history of wandering 

Description: Project Lifesaver is a wristband transmitter program for children and adults diagnosed with ASD and other developmental disabilities who wander.

*Spectrum Baseball (baseball)

Agency: Miracle League of Westchester & WJCS
Location: Games are held at Miracle Field-Ridge Road Park, Hartsdale, NY
Age Range: 5+
Description: The Miracle League and WJCS offer a free, non-competitive league for children with an autism spectrum disorder. The league uses a "buddy" system where each player is paired with an able-bodied peer.

*Supper Club (social/recreational)

Location: a variety of eateries in downtown White Plains 

Age Range: Young adults 18 - 35 

Description: This informal social and recreational group meets twice a month to help develop social skills, improve connections with others, and reinforce strengths. The relaxed setting allows members to come together in a non-threatening environment to share their personal experiences, gain emotional support, insight and strategies for coping with the daily struggles of work, family, and friends.

*Therapeutic Social Skills (TSS) Groups (social skills)

Age Range: Children 4-14 on the autistic spectrum 

Description: A variety of social skills groups based on age and ability for children diagnosed with ASD. Teaches essential social skills and provides for a supportive atmosphere in which youngsters can practice their skills. A bi-weekly parent support group accompanies these groups.

*YAD B'YAD (Hand-in-Hand) (social skills)

Description: A synagogue-based inclusive program for Jewish teenagers with developmental challenges that focuses on social skills and Jewish education.

Artsmarts with Miss Patti (art and music)

Location: Varies throughout Northern Westchester County

Description: ArtSmart is a combination of art and music, focusing on recreating famous artworks and making our own original music. Children with special needs welcome with a SEIT or parent accompanying them. Each case is discussed on an individual basis.

Description: Heartsong is nationally recognized for its program that utilizes the powerful tools of music therapy and art therapy which enable children with disabilities to express themselves. JCC of Mid-Westchester Saturday/Sunday and Afterschool Enrichment Programs

Agency: JCC of Mid-Westchester

Age Range: 5 and below, Pre-K-12 years  

Description: The JCC of Mid-Westchester offers Saturday, Sunday and Afterschool Enrichment programs for children with developmental disabilities. Sunday Funday is an all-inclusive social-skills based program featuring sports, gymnastics, social skills, speech, art, computers, and theater.  
The JCC also offers a Nursery School Towards Tomorrow program for children with special needs, aging from 2.9-5 years of age.

The Kidz Club (social skills)

Description: Kidz Club is designed to teach social skills to preschool - Kindergarten children who need support to engage appropriately in typical play situations on the playground, with playmates, etc. The Kidz Club parents group meets during the hour Kidz Club is in session.

Social Skills Classes

Description: Social skills-so essential, yet so difficult for many kids to master. The good news is that social skills can be learned, and nobody teaches them more effectively than Sociable Kidz, an acclaimed social-skills program founded by kindergarten teacher Susan Hendler in 2010 to serve children ages 4 to 12. The program uses proven techniques and methods-in ways that are fun, interesting, and age-appropriate for kids, such as games and role-playing-to help children improve their self-esteem, make friends, make eye contact while talking to others, learn to share, and more. Rise Above (musical theater program)

Agency:  Rosenthal JCC of Northern Westchester

        Age Range: K-6th grades 

Description: Learn the basics of musical theater, self confidence, and how to perform. Elementary school-age children will learn to work together, follow instructions, learn songs and simple dance steps and more in this fun, relaxed environment. Friends and families will enjoy an end-of-session presentation!

Production and direction from Michelle Morgenthal and Noah Silverman, teenage theater experts who have performed throughout Westchester! Oversight by a certified special education teacher and supervised by a licensed social worker.

Saturday Night Out (social/recreational)

Description: This supervised program offers kids a venue to socialize on the weekends with their friends. Parents drop off their child at a designated place which might be bowling, movies, sport events, local plays or a restaurant. Children begin to build independence as they learn how to manage money, behave in a safe and appropriate manner in the community, and interact with one another during fun social activities.

SKIP Mini-vacation Program (Special Kids Interesting Places)

Description: SKIP is a full day school vacation program specially staffed and modified to provide children with developmental disabilities and delays the opportunity to participate in Vacation Sensations and Vacation SPORTSations. Intakes are required. Register for as many or as few days as you'd like. Each day begins and ends at the JCC.

Description: WJCS' Havorah program provides unique opportunities to experience Jewish life for people with developmental disabilities who live in community residences, independently or with their families. Children, teens and adults participate in holiday celebrations, Shabbat dinners and other social, educational and cultural events with members of area synagogues and Jewish community organizations.

Matan

Description: Matan's self-contained classes serve children who benefit from smaller class sizes and shorter instruction time, and accommodate children with significant learning disabilities, developmental disorders, and other issues that affect learning and peer interaction. Children engage in hands-on, multi-sensory Jewish education, that builds on social skills enhancement and enables them to feel proud of their Jewish identity.

Balanced Parenting: Stress Reduction for Parents

Description: Balanced Parenting classes offer an opportunity to explore how we parent and why we make the day-to-day choices that we do. The classes reflect advances in the fields of medicine, neurology, psychology, and child development. The class series consists of six weekly two-hour sessions along with short daily exercises at home.

Fathers Talk: A Group for Fathers of Children with Developmental Challenges

Parents 4 Parents: A Special Needs Network

Description: Parents 4 Parents is a support network for parents of children with special needs who have been through have been through the emotions of receiving a diagnosis for their children, navigating the evaluation process and educational programs (EI, CPSE, CSE) and living with the day-to-day challenges of raining and caring for their children. We provide an intimate forum where parents can speak freely and emotionally without judgment or fear.

Sib Connection

Description: Provides a therapeutic support group for siblings that have brothers and sisters with special needs. It gives them the unique opportunity in a confidential group for peer support and to learn they are not alone.

About Us:

The WJCS Autism Center offers a range of supports and services to reduce the stresses and relieve the sense of isolation for youth, adults, and families affected by Autism. Individuals with ASD can find a variety of services. Family members can join on a formal and informal basis to build support. The AFC offers all members of the community (families, individuals, and professionals) a centralized information and referral resource.
