Nike Employees contribute $20,000 to Evergreen Habitat and the Evergreen School Project!
Students at Evergreen and Mountain View High Schools will be learning geometry in a unique way this year - by building a home with Evergreen Habitat! Teachers Bill Culver, Eric Dodge, and Kristy Gilmore at have four classes working on the project. This program "Math in Construction" promotes academic rigor, real world relevance, and positive working relationships. The students need no experience in construction and will gain awareness of future career pathways and the relevance of math through hands-on experience. The Evergreen School District developed this program to engage students in community service while learning valuable, practical math skills.
This project got a large boost in October with a $20,000 grant award from the Nike Employee Grant Fund! Through this fund, Nike employees awarded $500,000 to local nonprofits including Evergreen Habitat. The focus of this grant is to support projects that use physical activity to the betterment of community good, as well as non-sport projects that have direct impact on the well-being of children and families. Nike employees not only participate in review of grant applications, but they will also be volunteering their time alongside the students and other Habitat volunteers!
Nikki Danforth and her two teenage sons have been selected to purchase this home when it is complete. Coby, 15, loves architecture and math and Koda, 10, loves to build things. Nikki is very excited about this home and believes "It gives kids the chance to be involved."

2nd Annual Women Build Holiday Tea
Please join us for our second annual "Women Build Holiday Tea" on Saturday, December 1, 2012 from 11am-1pm. This year the festivities will be held in the beautifully restored Artillery Barracks in Historic Fort Vancouver at 600 East Hathaway, Vancouver, WA.
From the elegantly restored tin ceiling to the historically accurate white-oak hardwood floors, this unique historic venue is the perfect setting for the beginning of the holiday season and a fundraiser for Evergreen Habitat for Humanity's Women Build.
This year our special guest speaker will be Lee Rafferty - Lee is currently the Executive Director of the Vancouver's Downtown Association, and former owner of the very successful consignment store, Spanky's. Lee has lived in Vancouver since 1974 and has a wealth of experience working with new businesses and Women owned businesses. She is very excited and passionate about being part of the community and the future possibilities. The event will also include a silent auction of wonderful gifts donated by supporters and craftsmen alike.
The mission of the Women Build program is to empower women to take action against poverty housing conditions by nurturing, recruitment and the training of women to build simple, decent, affordable homes. Women from all walks of life are brought together to address in a concrete way the housing crisis facing families in our community. This is done by supporting the mission with our time, energy and financial support.

Cars for Homes and 2012 National Build Week

Car and vehicle donations are a great way to help Evergreen Habitat for Humanity! When you donate a car to Cars for Homes, you will help build and rehabilitate houses with families in need of affordable homes throughout Clark County community!
The process to donate your car is fast, simple and free! Call (877) 277-4344 to get the process started in donating your car. Not only is it fast and free but you may qualify for a tax deduction as well!
What can you donate? * Car * Truck * RV * Boat * Motorcycle * Construction or farm equipment * Any other vehicle, running or not!
Why should you donate a vehicle to Cars for Homes? One hundred percent of the net proceeds of the sale of your car will be distributed to Evergreen Habitat for Humanity. We will use these funds to help build decent, affordable homes with families in your community, helping to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. Your donation may qualify for a tax deduction and junk cars will be recycled, helping save energy and natural resources.
This year the 2012 National Cars for Homes Build Week will promote our Cars for Homes program by kicking off a build day on the construction site. Our Clark County Store will be on site to hand out hot cocoa and see the volunteers off to a great start. While some will stay on site and build on our Planet Clark Emerald home, the first green, high energy efficient home for Evergreen Habitat, others will be going out to promote the Cars for Homes program by hanging beautifully decorated door hangers and waving to the public on the 205 overpass with the Cars for Homes banner. You don't want to miss this event!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Esther Windover
Although Esther only started volunteering on Evegreen's site a month ago, she has worked over 50 hours already! Construction Manager Kris Cowan describes her as "hard working". Americorps Construction Coordinator Lauren Zimmermann adds that she is "creative, colorful, patient" and has a "youthful enthusiasm". Esther's involvement with Habitat for Humanity started a couple of years ago with a church trip to build in Biloxi, Mississippi. She sold paintings to help fund the church's trips, and has since donated additional pieces of art to Habitat families.
Esther says that her favorite part of working with Habitat is that "it's a community effort...everyone is serious, but it's as much fun as a community barn raising." She compares building with Habitat to "a wonderful miracle", and advises potential volunteers to "don't think, do!"
