 NEW in the Knight Spot

On February 23rd Hospitality students participated in soup making and service at the Empty Bowl Beloit held at BMHS.  the event drew a huge crowd and was a successful fundraiser for Caritas!  A special thanks to Mr. Schenck for sharing his family recipe "Schenck Jameson Chicken" and culinary wizardry on Thursday, Feb 21st as an Empty Bowl
kick-off.

We have fresh herbs!  A huge thank you to the Merrill Community Garden and Mr. John Ramstad for providing the time and resources by donating our indoor herb garden.  The garden features fresh thyme, lemon thyme, parsley, oregano, basil and more.  The Knight Spot crew appreciates his kind donation and promise to put it to good use in addition to partnering in some gardening.
 PROM 2013
May 4th

The Junior Class has been busy planning this year's prom.  Prom will be held on Saturday, May 4th from 7:00-11:00 PM and the theme is "The Roaring 20's".  It is important to remember that prom is a part of our privilege based system, and students must meet the certain expectations to be eligible to attend prom.  These expectations are as follows:
  • Be in school.  A student with 5 or more UNEXCUSED absences from a period or a block 2nd semester will not be permitted to attend prom.
  • Be on time.  A student who is chronically tardy and has unserved tardy detentions will not be permitted to attend prom.
  • Make good choices. A student with an out-of-school suspension from March 26, until May 3, 2013 will not be permitted to attend prom.
  • Pay your fees.  A senior who has not made arrangements with the school bookkeeper to pay school fees will not be permitted to attend prom.
  • Turn in a contract.  A student without a signed contract will not be permitted to buy a ticket or attend prom.
  • Have an ID.  A student without a school ID will not be permitted to attend prom.

Prom is an exciting night that many of our students look forward to.  Please review the expectations with your son or daughter so they are clear about what is expected of them to be eligible to attend prom.

Greetings!

Dear Fellow Purple Knight Families,

With Spring just around the corner...it means its nearly time for course seelction!

In the coming weeks students will be meeting with their counselors to begin the process of scheduling for the 2013-2014 school year. We will also be placing the course selection sheet and booklet online. Here are some tips for a successful scheduling process:

  • Take time to read the course selection booklet cover to cover.
  • Know the requirements listed for BMHS graduation.
  • Study and know the course requirements for entry into a technical college and 4 year college (pg. 39).
  • Request a copy of your transcript from your counselor if you are unsure about staying on track for graduation.
  • ASK, ASK, ASK!Counselors and administrators are here to help you make informed decisions about your course schedule.Make an appointment to see them to ensure everything is aligned.
  • Step out of your comfort zone.Think about taking a class that will stretch your mind.

These are just a few tips that will make the scheduling process go smoothly. Again, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of examining the course booklet.I look forward to seeing our returning students in their new schedule in the coming months.

"IN THE HEIGHTS"
tells the universal story of a vibrant community in New York's Washington Heights neighborhood - a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open,  and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.  It's a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.  "IN THE HEIGHTS" is the winner of the 2008 Tony Awards for Best Musical, Best Score, Best Choreography and Best Orchestrations!

Counseling Office News

Course Selection:  Soon students will be completing their course selections for next year. When they bring home the form, it is important to discuss their choices with them. Call the counselor if you have questions or need to make a correction. We can not stress enough that students need to choose carefully because changes are difficult later.

AP Testing: AP test sign-up must be done by March 18

with their AP teacher. Cost is $89 per AP exam.

Juniors, It's ACT TimeJuniors going on to 4-year colleges are encouraged to take the April or June ACT tests. Other than improving your grades and visiting colleges, this is the next most important thing to do this spring.

Great Jobs, Great Money:  There is an increasing shortage of jobs in the skilled trades. To learn more
about salaries and training check out

http://www.bluecollarandproudofit.com

College DeadlinesAccepted students will be getting applications for housing and orientation. Our advice is to mail these back immediately for the best chance to get your requests.

College vs. Reality:  Many students think of a 4-yr college as grade 13 - just like high school. They do not realize that college is for students who like to learn and are willing to sacrifice to make it. Students with C's in high school may have a challenging time being successful and students who get D's and F's have an 82% chance of not making it to the second year. While everyone should have a chance to reach their dreams, parents might want to have a long talk with their teen about spending $10,000 - $40,000 a year when the student is not prepared to succeed. What can your teen do to be better prepared for college?

  • Have an attitude that desires learning.
  • Be willing to spend the hours needed studying, re-writing, and asking for help.
  • Keep the courses on the schedule. Not liking a teacher or subject matter that is "too hard" must be mastered.
  • Take the most challenging classes we offer.
  • Re-take classes with low grades.
  • Take a full load of classes.
  • Don't try to graduate "early".
  • Keep work hours under 20 per week.
  •

Financial Aid: Students going on to school should have already applied for financial aid using the on-line FAFSA form. Each school has a priority deadline after which they begin handing out the financial aid awards. If you apply after that date, there is not as much money in the "pot" to divide out. The deadlines vary, but all are approaching. Once you get the student aid report back, check it for errors and follow the directions. Call your college or tech school if you have questions. Aid awards come through the school, so only students already accepted will get a letter.

Drug Screenings Available:

The Occupational Health & Wellness Center, 1650 Lee Lane, offers two types of drug screenings. An appointment is needed and a cash payment is expected. A parent or guardian must accompany the teen and the teen must have a photo ID. If you have concerns about your teens' potential alcohol or drug use you can also speak with our district coordinator, Faith Mattison (361-3143; the school social worker, Alyssa Schroeder (361-3201); the psychologist, Rachel Tiffany (361-3006), or a counselor.

Scholarships This is the busiest time of the year for scholarship applications. Your senior should be checking the list, picking up applications, and completing them. Meet the deadlines!  You'll find more scholarships at

A Reminder for Seniors:  Don't blow it now! Seniors - please be aware that just because you have received an acceptance letter from a college in the spring does not mean you can afford to "slack off" semester 2. Remember, your final admission is contingent upon your successful completion of classes and maintaining your high school ranking. Every senior going to college has a final transcript sent to their college. And every year colleges have to rescind admission for some students, because they have failed to keep up their grades during their senior year.

Register with Selective Service:  All United States male citizens are required to register with the Selective Service system within 30 days of their 18th birthday. This can be done within the time period of 30 days before your 18th

birthday to 30 days after.

Movin' News - BMHS Keeping Active

60 Minutes of Activity A Day is Recommended for Students

The Physical Education/Health Department is encouraging students to get moving. This month the "Active" Project is in full swing. PE classes are emphasizing MVPA - Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity. Open gyms and fitness centers continue during lunch and after school. Encourage your student to take advantage of these opportunities.

Lifetime Wellness takes on ZUMBA Emily-Zumba

ZUMBA is described by many as a fun effective workout system that is set to a combination of Latin and International music.   It is like a party that everyone can join. There are no wrong moves as long as you are moving. Students in Lifetime Wellness started out 2013 with a ZUMBA party. Guest instructor - Mrs. Pelz (Assistant Principal) lead the students throughout the day. What a great experience that combined dancing, working out, learning new moves, and having fun!

RED OUT: The Physical Education and Health Department sponsored a RED OUT on February 1, 2013. Health heart awareness was the theme as funds were raised through the sales of t-shirts for the American Heart Association. The support of the Basketball team, Nightingales, staff, and students created the success behind this event. Thank you to everyone that participated by wearing red on February 1st. By combining this event with the Hoops for Heart event over $1400.00 was raised for the American Heart Association.

Red Out 2 Red Out 1

  1. The American Heart Association is second only to the federal government as a source of funding for cardiovascular and stroke research.
  2. Smoking is the single most preventable cause of death in the United States. If you smoke cigarettes (or cigars), you have a higher risk of illness and death from heart attack, stroke and other diseases.
  3. More women die of cardiovascular disease as well as men than the next five causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer.
  4. Every 29 seconds an American will suffer a coronary event.

Hoops for Heart

Thirty six students forming nine teams brought their game on at the second annual 3 on 3 Hoops for Heart Tournament. The BMHS field house was filled with energy and basketball moves that brought cheers, sighs, ooohhhs and aaaahhs. Every game offered a challenge. The final championship game was played between the All Stars (Andri Sullivan, matt Masterson, Austin Grover, and Jose Guterrez) and the Los Monstros (Julian Leon, William McEachin, Logan Levin, and Mrio Nixon) with the Los Monstros coming out on TOP after a tough battle with a deciding game. Smoothies sponsored by ARAMARK helped the teams last through their two hours plus of intense basketball.

SMARTER Balanced Pilot Test

Beloit Memorial High School is one of a limited number of schools in the country selected to pilot the Smarter Balanced Assessment this spring. This is a unique opportunity for us as we will be directly involved in the development activities for the multi-state assessment that will be administered to our students in approximately 21 states starting in the 2014-2015 school year. Schools throughout the Smarter Balanced states were specifically selected for participation in this pilot, and like us, will administer the online assessment to certain grades in either Mathematics or English Language Arts starting this February.

For BMHS, students in grades 9 and 11 have been selected to take the pilot test in Mathematics. The assessment will take place during the weeks of April 15th through April 26th, and will take about 3 hours of your child's time. The assessment may be administered over multiple days or sessions.

This is a very exciting opportunity for BMHS. Students will be able to try out the new, online testing software and innovative test items that will be representative of some of the items on future Smarter Balanced assessments. We believe that students will have a positive experience and an opportunity to influence the development of future Smarter Balanced assessments.

Additionally, the pilot has been designed to assist the Consortium to gather data about:

  • The implementation of the online software
  • How the items function and their technical quality
  • The effectiveness of test administration materials
  • Areas for improvement prior to the 2014 field test and 2015 operational administrations

If you would like more information about Smarter Balanced, please visit the Smarter Balanced website at http://www.smarterbalanced.org/. If you do not want your child to participate in the pilot or if you have any questions regarding your child's participation, please contact Mrs. Pelz at epelz@sdb.k12.wi.us or 361-3025.
