Greetings!
Greetings BMHS Families,
I am pleased to announce that the BMHS pool construction project has officially begun. Ground was broken Friday, December 14th and the excitement has commenced. We are pleased to offer our students and our community a state of the art aquatic facility for years and years to come. Sometimes people assume that the pool is primarily used for team sports; however, this is not the case. Our current aquatic facility is utilized by our physical education classes, which as you know is a graduation requirement. In addition, life-saving courses, open swims and various events are held in our current facility. We only expect opportunities for pool usage to expand and grow in our new aquatic center. I thank you for your patience and support during the construction phase as it does pose inconvenience. In the end it will be well worth the effort! Please know that the tennis court construction project will commence on the south side of the building in the spring. We look forward to again bringing new opportunities for our students and community with the new courts. More to come on that as we approach next year...
On the topic of tardiness....
I ask that you pay particular attention to the section on our efforts to enforce tardy policies here at BMHS. We have made great efforts and seen positive results in reducing tardiness in the morning as well as after lunch; however, we still have some students who are not making the grade when it comes to getting to class on time. We cannot teach an empty seat and therefore are instituting some new procedures to hold students accountable for their #1 job---being in class. Please take a look at the section on our re-doubled efforts. Should you have any questions you are welcome to contact your son/daughter's assistant principal who oversees his/her attendance.
In closing, I wish all of our BMHS families well for the holidays. Stay safe and warm and cherish the things that matter to you most.
Sincerely,
Dr. Thomas M. Johnson, Principal |

BMHS System to Address Chronic School Tardies
Many students consistently arrive late to school each morning. This habitual tardiness greatly affects a students' academic progress. Arriving late to school disrupts the instruction and learning of others.
Per our District Attendance Policy, students are only allowed to be excused for being tardy two times per school year. The attendance policy is located on the School District of Beloit website www.sdb.k12.wi.us Tardiness is found in 431 Rule 1 dc. You can review your own child's attendance/tardy record on the Skyward System.
Currently, many students serve the assigned 15 minute detention for each tardy over lunch or after school. We have some students who disregard this consequence. We liken this to not paying your fine for a parking violation.
Beginning January 2013, BMHS will take a stronger stance on students being tardy to school (morning arrival and returning after lunch). Each month, students who have five or more tardies to school and have not served their detentions, will be assigned to one week of "Loss of Privileges" or "LOP". Students will lose the privilege of open lunch and will be assigned to a closed lunch/study hall for five consecutive days - LOP Week. This system will have a progression of disciplinary actions:
- Failure to serve one of the assigned days in LOP will result in receiving one half-day in the Alternative Learning Environment room (ALE) and in receiving a Disciplinary Action in their record under Code #215 Truancy/Absenteeism/Truancy.
- Failure to serve a second day in LOP will result in one full day in ALE - Also Disciplinary Action under Code #215.
- Failure to serve an additional day in LOP will result in one full day of Out-of-School Suspension: Disciplinary Code #214 Repeated Misconduct and will require a meeting with the students' parents.
Students with excessive tardies may further be denied future opportunities and access to special events such as sporting activities, dances, and/or having a parking pass.
Serving a full week in LOP will allow a student to clear all prior tardies on their record.
We are complying with state attendance requirements and trying to emphasize the importance of arriving to school on time each day. Developing the habit of getting to school on time can make a significant difference in a student's academic successes. Consequences in the future of arriving late to college classes, tech school classes, and to one's job are far greater. We want our students to understand this now and change their habit of tardiness. We encourage families to discuss this with their BMHS student(s), review their morning routine, and help students arrive to school well before 8:00 am each day.
Thank you for your ongoing efforts to support Beloit Memorial High School! |

AP Parent Night January 29th
6:30 PM
Beloit Memorial High School is pleased to offer Advanced Placement (AP) courses to our Purple Knight students. AP classes help individual students to acquire the knowledge, skills, and habits necessary to be successful in college, while also enhancing one's ability to write, study, and time manage. According to the College Board, "In AP classrooms, the focus is not on memorizing facts and figures. Instead you'll engage in intense discussions, solve problems collaboratively, and learn to write clearly and persuasively." Not only will students have access to the post-secondary experience, AP students also have the opportunity to earn college credits while still in high school. At BMHS we are proud to offer 21 AP classes. The classes that are offered include: Studio Art 2-D Design, Drawing, Macro Economics (offered through Odyssey), Micro Economics (offered through Odyssey), Language and Literature, Literature and Composition, Statistics, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, European History, Human Geography, Psychology, US Government, US History, Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, Spanish, and Music Theory. On Tuesday, January 29, 2013 BMHS will be hosting AP Family Night. At this time, families are invited to explore AP possibilities. Administrators and AP teachers will be on hand from 6:30 pm to 7:00 pm in the BMHS library to provide information and answer questions. Please join us in exploring this wonderful opportunity. If you cannot make it and have questions, please contact Mrs. Emily Pelz, Assistant Principal at 608.361.3025. |

School Counseling Office

Remaining ACT Test Dates
The ACT will be given February 9th and April 13th at BMHS & June 8th at U-Rock and Janesville Craig. If college bound juniors have not yet taken the ACT they should take the test on one of these dates.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT COLLEGE ADMISSIONS!
College admission counselors have asked us to pass on this message to seniors. "Your favorable admissions decision is conditional. You are expected to complete the senior year courses that you identified at the time of application, at the same if not higher level of success than your cumulative grade point average indicates." Seniors must seek permission from colleges prior to making changes to their course selection after they have submitted an application and/or been notified of admissions for the fall of 2013.
Seniors-Financial Aid Paperwork
Parents of seniors who are planning on applying for financial aid should plan on completing their 2012 income tax forms ASAP in January. FAFSA forms are available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. (Make sure you use this address for the free federal site, if you go to a commercial fafsa.com site, they will charge you!) Since the FAFSA should be sent as soon as possible (before the schools give away all their money), doing taxes early is essential.
Child's E-mail Address
As students approach their senior year, they often rely on e-mail to contact schools they are interested in attending and/or scholarship resources. They may also use e-mail to apply to colleges or for financial aid. Unfortunately, many teens do not think this far ahead when deciding their e-mail addresses. Please find out what your child is known by in the e-mail world.
IMPORTANT: Parents of Seniors:
It is imperative that you know what the graduation status of your student. Are they on track for graduation? If you have any questions, call your students' counselor.
JUNIOR YEAR: Suggestions and Timetable of Events
- Consider taking the PSAT test
- Consult monthly guidance calendar and listen to the daily announcements for important news.
- Consider attending one of the Wisconsin Education Fairs to meet with college reps.
- Meet with college reps that schedule school visits.
- Pick up an ACT/SAT registration packet and take the practice test. Plan to take your official ACT/SAT in April or June 2013. Consider a campus visit during vacations or summer. Write for private or out of state applications.
- Update your resume.
- If you are working part time, seriously evaluate the pros and cons working has on your study time and grades.
Student Vacinations
If your son or daughter is going to be living in a dorm next fall, Wisconsin Act 61, which took effect January 1, 2004, requires that he or she be vaccinated for Hepatitis B and Meningococcal disease before moving into the dorm. Most of our students have already received Hepatitis B vaccinations, but will have to be vaccinated for Meningococcal Disease.
Unofficial and Official Test Score Reports & Transcripts
Most colleges and universities require freshmen applicants to send or arrange to send scores from the ACT (or SAT) to the campus. If the word "official" is printed in the directions that usually mean the scores have to come directly from ACT or SAT testing agencies. You have the option of listing schools to get your scores when you register for the test. These are official scores, as they come from the testing agency. If you need more official scores sent, you need to contact the testing agency yourself and have them send the scores, usually at a charge of about ten dollars each. We can send a copy to the college or university, but the scores we send are "unofficial."
"Official" and "Unofficial" transcripts mean a different thing. Official transcripts are mailed by the school, with the Principal's signature and the school seal. Unofficial copies are sent by you. Most colleges, universities, and scholarship agencies want official transcripts. As a student at Beloit Memorial, we will send out as many transcripts as you want or need, no charge. Once you graduate or leave the school, there is a $3.00 charge per transcript.
College Goal Wisconsin (FAFSA Workshop):
This year's College Goal Sunday will be held on Saturday, February 19th. Information and assistance will be provided to high school seniors and their families in filling out the FREE Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This is the first and most important step in qualifying for financial aid. Parents, if you have questions regarding what you must bring along with you, please call Mrs. Erin Wolf at 361-3027. You can also visit www.collegegoalwi.org for details.
Youth Options:
Youth Options applications must be filled out and turned in to Mrs. Snow no later than March 1, 2013 if your student wants to sign up for a college class that will begin in the fall.
Upcoming Events:
*BMHS Expo and AP night will be held on January 29, 2013.
*Term 3 Parent-Teacher Conferences will be held on February 21st, 2013 from 5-7:00 p.m. in the BMHS Field House.
*SAT will be held January 26, 2013. You may register on line for this test.
Scholarship Information:
Are you looking for Scholarship money to pay for college? Visit Stateline Community Foundation's website, statelinecf.org
Parents may be getting mail from various scholarship search businesses; guaranteeing financial aid," inviting you to a "special meeting" or promising you "money for college." Let the buyer beware! No one can guarantee you a scholarship, especially since the companies providing this service are not the ones awarding the money. The definition of financial aid also includes loans, which almost any student can get, so the promise of aid for college can be rather deceptive. |

Art News
Art club is working on many fundraisers for the summer trip to Europe. The trip will involve several world famous art museums. Any interested student can still sign up. Art club meets every Tuesday in Room D319 from 3:30 until 5:00 PM.
We hope that patrons to our Beloit Post Office and other locations downtown enjoy the numerous windows that BMHS art students worked hard to paint for the holidays. Students created and painted their own original art for all the windows.
Art students are working on creating original art in a variety of classes. In Computer Art, students become familiar with programs that are currently used in the art industry. Digital art has opened a new world of employment in the art field. Students can continue their work locally at Madison College that reports numerous opportunities in the Madison area for digitally trained artists. Next year more digital art course work will be offered in the BMHS art department.

PTO Update...
Greetings Parents and Faculty
- We are well on the way to amending our Bylaws to reflect the new quarterly meeting schedule, and will make sure to keep you all in the loop.
- Our partnering with the counseling office to hand out pies during the Financial Aid Information Session was a success; we will make sure to keep all updated as far as follow up events...
- Please keep Box Tops for Education in mind; we are working with our Food Service Staff to set up collection areas, and they will be clearly marked! These Box Tops add up to great incentives for BMHS; look for updates on this launch
- PTO Positive Postcards is in full swing, with nominations totaling close to 100 so far this school year...Teachers, keep 'em coming, and students keep up the awesome attitudes and great behavior. We LOVE to write these notes home!
- New for 2013 - a VOLUNTEER POOL. If you have given us your email, we will be contacting you to see where you might want to volunteer @ BMHS. No pressure, just a hint so we know when to contact you if the opportunity for you to make a difference arises. Thanks!
- We will be holding a very cool fundraiser in the Spring...look for crazy cupcakes that students can give as gifts, share with friends, etc. More SOON.
- Finally, we are still building the FACEBOOK page, and looking forward to you LIKING us J
