What factors can cause a $1000 tree removal from a home to become a $5000 tree removal?

There are many factors that can greatly impact the cost of a tree removal. The size of the tree involved is a main factor; however, it is also important to know the extent of damage the tree caused to the roof of a structure. Even a large tree can be routinely removed if it is simply lying on the roof. By contrast, the removal of a small tree that has heavily impacted the roof can be very complex and costly.

Another important variable is access to the site. Clear access enables a professional crew to utilize the most appropriate equipment and techniques for the job, which almost by definition means the most cost effective. Poor access can require dangerous maneuvers or specialty equipment, such as a crane, to safely remove a tree.

Currently, available claims estimating software provides limited data as it pertains to tree removal; simply knowing the diameter of a fallen tree, which is the only pricing criteria most versions of estimating software include, does not provide sufficient information required to evaluate an estimate.

Methods used to value a tree - a case study

There are four (4) primary methods used to determine the value of a tree that is larger than what is available in a nursery environment. The language of the policy or the particular circumstances of a claim will determine which method is the most appropriate to use. The methods are as follows:

  1. Replacement cost method
  2. Actual cost to replace the destroyed tree
  3. Cost of smaller replacement tree(s)
  4. Tree appraisal

HMI Launches CAT Deployment Certification Program for Emergency Tree Removal Crews

In order to ensure that its client's receive the highest level of service, efficiency and quality, HMI has developed a deployment training and certification program for the professional tree care companies in its network (the "Member(s)") that wish to deploy following catastrophe events. This program is designed to train all Members that deploy to support HMI's insurance carrier clients following a storm on program requirements, protocols and operational requirements that have been developed to ensure client satisfaction during major events.

HMI requires each Member to complete this program in order to qualify for deployments during the 2013 storm season. HMI had roughly 1/3 of its Members complete the program, including two of the largest tree care companies in the country.  Collectively this provides HMI with access to potentially hundreds of fully credentialed tree crews with vast experience handling emergency tree removals on residential properties.    HMI easily surpassed its goal of doubling its deployment capacity compared with 2012.

Key components of HMI Deployment Certification:

1. Service level expectations

2. Best pricing practices

3. Optimizing communications and updates on work flow status

4. Documentation requirements

5. Compliance with local regulations and taxes

6. Understanding FEMA rules and requirements

HMI's deployment program is designed to maximize its emergency response resources and ensure  high professional standards and superior customer service. HMI has access to 2,500 tree crews across the country and has deployed for insurance carriers multiple times in CAT events.
