March 2013
Greetings! ,

As an advocate for transparency, I get a lot of questions from architects about how they can get manufacturers to share information about the chemicals in their products.

The first step: ask for it.   A few years ago, I only rarely received requests for detailed chemical information about my products.   That's changing quickly. Since the launch of the Health Product Declaration (HPD) Open Standard Version 1 in November, several architectural firms have published formal policies regarding transparency and chemicals of concern and requested manufacturers to submit HPDs. New credits in LEED v4 will increase the focus on both chemicals and transparency.

Compiling and reporting chemical data isn't always easy. Even manufacturers that want to disclose product information may get significant push-back from suppliers. One thing is sure though, if you don't ask, manufacturers won't try to provide it. And, if you favor manufacturers that are willing to disclose detailed information about their products, others will follow suit.

You can download a copy of one of Alpar's HPDs here, and you can always contact me with questions about Alpar's materials and practices.

Sincerely,

Lisa Britton, CSI, CCPR, LEED AP BD+C
President

About Alpar Architectural Products

Alpar Architectural's mission is to provide high-performance building products that have the least possible environmental impact.

Alpar Architectural manufactures wall and corner guards and sheet wall protection from a variety of environmentally friendly materials including deTerra biobased polymer.   DeTerra biobased polymer is PVC-free and petroleum-free, and is the construction industry's only fire-rated biobased polymer.  More than 90% biobased and rapidly renewable, it exceeds fire test performance of PVC, ABS and PETG when tested to ASTM E-84, and meets or exceeds most mechanical performance tests relevant to wall protection.   We also offer a range of stainless steel and wood profiles.

To learn more about the human and environmental health issues related to the manufacture, use and disposal of PVC, visit our resources page on our website or click HERE.

deTerra is a registered trademark of Interfacial Solutions IP, LLC.
