New entrepreneurs' website launched   The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership has added a new entrepreneurial website to its arsenal of newcomer attraction tools with the creation of www.entrepreneurlink.ca.

The new website features a searchable real estate section that provides information on available retail, commercial, and industrial properties in Lambton County, and also a link to information on Sarnia-Lambton's array of municipal and private business and industrial parks.

Along with the real estate search feature, the website highlights Sarnia-Lambton's excellent newcomer support services and the area's variety of rural, urban, and waterfront lifestyles. The site is graphically designed to complement sister site www.ihatetraffic.ca, which is geared to attract young retirees to the area.

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership would like to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the Sarnia-Lambton Real Estate Board, with whom they worked closely on the creation of the site's searchable real estate feature.

Video promotes Sarnia-Lambton's energy industries   A new "energetic" four minute video shines the spotlight on Sarnia-Lambton's energy sector. Since its debut at the All-Energy 2014 conference in Toronto in April the video has been getting a lot of attention from both local and external audiences. If you have not yet had a chance to check out the video, you can access it at www.sarnialambton.on.ca/main/ns/1/doc/382/url/1eYgKMZLy6Y?rel=0  This and other videos on Sarnia-Lambton are featured on the home page of our website at www.sarnialambton.on.ca

If you would like to include the Energy Cluster video in any of your electronic promotions please give Edith a call at 519-332-1820.

Intelligent communities  Over the next year Lambton County will be participating in the benchmarking phase of an important project that will ultimately result in Lambton County becoming part of an information technology "Intelligent Region". This ambitious project is spearheaded by the Southwest Economic Alliance (SWEA), and is planned to roll out over a number of years. The result will be a series of southwesternOntario communities that are at the forefront regarding infrastructure and investment in information technology.

This forward-thinking project will create communities with IT capabilities that will help attract and retain youth, immigrants, and workers in knowledge-based sectors. The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership and the County of Lambton, along with other key partners, will be working with SWEA on this initiative. A team of Community Engagement Coordinators will fan out across southwest Ontario for the benchmarking segment of the project. We look forward to your cooperation and engagement as we work to position Lambton as part of this southwestern Ontario Intelligent Region.

Recent investment activity

Atelka - The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership was successful in attracting Atelka to our area. This in-bound Canadian-owned contact centre began operation in Spring 2014, at the Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park. The contact centre is hiring in "waves", with the first complement of employees trained and now "on the floor" at the contact centre. Anticipated employment is 300 when fully operational.  In fact, Atelka is hiring now! Applicants can visit the call centre, located in the main building of the Research Park at 1086 Modeland Road, Sarnia.  Resumes are also being accepted online at www.atelka.com/en.

Ubiquity Solar - The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership was successful in attracting Ubiquity Solar to our area. This company, which will produce polysilicon wafers for the solar energy market, is currently setting up a pilot plant in the Bluewater Energy Park; and anticipate commercial scale operations in 2016. Employment at the pilot plant is slated to start with 10. The full manufacturing facility is expected to employ several hundred.

We continue to work with a number of investment prospects that are looking at Lambton County. The majority of these are in the chemistry and energy sectors.

Spreading the word about Lambton County - Economic Partnership staff have been "working" conferences and trade shows as avenues to make new contacts, touch base with existing contacts, and heighten awareness of our area in our targeted sectors. Recent participation includes:

  • World Bio Markets Congress, Amsterdam, March 2014
  • All-Energy Canada 2014, Toronto, April 2014 (George Mallay was a panel speaker, and also presented a special session on Sarnia-Lambton)
  • Bio World Congress, Philadelphia, May 2014
  • Global Petroleum Show, Calgary, June 2014

Newcomer attraction  The Economic Partnership continues to promote the area in a number of innovative ways, such as the partnership that has been forged with Bienvenidos a Canada. This is the fastest growing entrepreneurial group in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).

We have noticed a significant shift in our audience's knowledge level of Sarnia-Lambton. We are finding that, rather than having no knowledge of our area as was often the case in the past, newcomers are familiar with Sarnia-Lambton, may have already visited our area, and are looking for specific information on housing. This is attributed to aggressive marketing campaigns: ongoing print advertising in the GTA; Toronto Transit busboard campaigns; the liveinlambton.ca portal; and a new social media campaign. Following are some recent events at which Sarnia-Lambton was promoted:

  • Forever Young Show, Burlington, May 2014 - spoke with about 100 couples who requested additional information. Spoke with about 30 couples who had already visited our area and were continuing to express interest
  • Bienvenido a Canada - entrepreneurs from Latin America, Toronto, April 2014
  • National Job Fair, April 2-3, Toronto - resulted in four candidates receiving Sarnia-Lambton job interviews.
