As I See It...

Election season is now behind us.

Some of you may be facing new members on your City Council.

I know you are all very busy getting ready for the holiday shopping season but I would encourage anyone who has newly elected council to reach out to them.

Invite them to your facility, educate them about your operations, the things your store does for the community and bring them up to speed on your goals for the coming year.

Most people don't know that you may transfer funds to the general fund to help reduce taxes, that your store participates in the annual MMBA food drive and your local food shelf benefits from it, or that funding from the store funded a piece of equipment, etc.

Tell your story!

Taking the time to introduce them to your operations will help them be better councilmembers.

They will be more prepared to answer questions constituents may ask them.

The more people know about the benefits of the facility, the more successful you will be.

Jackson Eyes New Liquor Store
Construction

The Jackson city council recently authorized city staff to begin the process of obtaining a preliminary design and budget for the construction of a new municipal liquor store.

Staff will assemble a request for proposals to send to three or four architecture firms that specialize in designing municipal liquor stores.

City Administrator Jennifer Bromeland said once a preliminary design and budget is available and it appears feasible to pursue construction of a new facility, the market study completed in 2013 can be updated and bids can be sought and financing obtained.

The East Coast is getting smacked with snow.

Here is a photo of someone making the best of the situation -- outside their front door!

Way Too Early this Morning!!
no theft

The MMBA office received this email at 4:18 AM this morning, from Buffalo Lake Liquor manager Karissa Kurth:

Please send out a memo to all members to make sure their buildings are secured at night & to reevaluate their money & closing procedures.

We were robbed tonight within 30mins of my bartender leaving.

Safe is gone but money was dropped in the bank & all that was left in the safe was maybe $100 in coins.

It is obvious they have been here before & knew what to do.

My next question is a recommendation on where I can get a new safe.

Hey Guys, the Russians Aren't Buying Pabst After All
Pabst

By David Gelles, NY Times

Remember in September when it was announced that Oasis Beverages had acquired the Pabst Brewing Company?

Well, it turns out that never happened.

Despite a BusinessWire release announcing the deal, Oasis was never part of the buying group, or even involved in talks to buy Pabst.

Instead, it seems this is what actually happened, according to people briefed on the matter:

Eugene Kashper, a United States citizen who was born in Russia and has a long history in the brewing business, decided he wanted to buy Pabst. At the time, Mr. Kashper was chairman of Oasis Beverages, a brewer and distributor that serves the Russian and Eastern European markets.

Through its ownership of the Moscow Brewing Company, Oasis claims a 12 percent share of the Moscow beer market.

But as Mr. Kashper went about planning to buy Pabst, he was doing so independently of his role as chairman of Oasis.

Instead, Mr. Kashper was working with TSG Consumer Partners, a San Francisco-based private equity firm that invests in consumer goods companies.

At the same time, Mr. Kashper was discussing a distribution agreement with Oasis that would introduce Pabst to the Russian and Eastern European markets.

There were also discussions about selling Oasis a minority nonvoting stake in Pabst.

Those talks broke down because of market conditions - namely the fact that Western nations are imposing sanctions on Russia in response to its aggression in Ukraine, making this an inopportune time to introduce a distinctly American beer.

And Oasis was never in talks to acquire Pabst outright.

Rather, Mr. Kashper and TSG formed a new company, Blue Ribbon Intermediate Holdings, which did, in fact, purchase Pabst.

Despite the fact that Oasis was never involved in the deal, the media release said that Oasis was the acquirer, suggesting that a beverage company with deep ties to Russia was acquiring an American brand.

The news ignited a minor outrage among hipsters. One thread on Reddit (sample comment: "I drank pre-CCCP PBR, so nyeh!") attracted hundreds of comments.

It remains unclear why the original announcement was inaccurate. Mr. Kashper and TSG declined to comment.

Oasis could not be reached for comment.

But in the end, the Russians never acquired Pabst. The beer - favored by hipsters from Brooklyn to San Francisco - remains safely in American hands.

I Have Some GREAT News!!

The newlywed wife said to her husband when he returned from work, "I have great news for you.

Pretty soon, we're going to be three in this house instead of two."

Her husband ran to her with a smile on his face and delight in his eyes.

He was glowing of happiness and kissing his wife when she said, "I'm glad that you feel this way since tomorrow morning, my mother moves in with us."

Success is a Continuous Journey

In his typically candid style, Richard St. John reminds us that success is not a one-way street, but a constant journey.

He uses the story of his business' rise and fall to illustrate a valuable lesson - when we stop trying, we fail.
