As I See It...

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers.

It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.

As September starts in my city we're in the midst of preparing the 2015 budget for the liquor store and other departments.

The liquor store employees have met and discussed the degree of success we had with our promotions, looking at the factors that may have contributed to a weak or successful promotion, i.e. weather, customer promotion awareness and timing.

Sharing this information with our clerk and liquor committee I'm sure our mix of advertising dollars is definitely going to change for 2015.

The net effect is to make our store a stronger part of the community and a continued profitable revenue generator for the city.

In the Spirit of Labor Day, what contributions will your "Muni" liquor store have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of your city?

Starting next Wednesday in Thief River Falls MMBA will be starting the first of 6 Regional meetings throughout the state. We will be discussing, but not limited to:

  • Legislative issues.
  • Business trends 2014
  • Food Drive October 2014
  • Round Table Discussion
  • Chateau Ste. Michelle Wine Tasting (Thief River Falls, Alexandria, Worthington and Metro)

We welcome city managers/administrators/clerks and elected officials to attend and participate.

Information on the meetings can be found at: www.municipalbev.com

Elk River Uses Liquor Store Funds for Quiet Zones

From Star News

The Elk River City Council has taken another step toward silencing train horns in the city, by determining how to pay the estimated $1.35 million cost of the "quiet zone" project.

Becoming a quiet zone means trains would no longer have to sound their horns at crossings in the city. Sixty to 70 trains travel through Elk River a day.

Qualifying Elk River as a quiet zone entails installing some railroad crossing safety enhancements and a wayside horn system (see list below).

The City Council unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday to use $850,000 in profits from the city's two liquor stores (Northbound and Westbound) as an internal loan to help pay for the project initially.

Under the plan, the $850,000 would be repaid to the city's Municipal Liquor Store Enterprise Fund over 10 years from property taxes beginning with taxes payable in 2016.

7 Reasons Retail Competitors Have More Business Than You Do
Competition

By Bob Phibbs

They hire better people. It is next to impossible to train someone who really doesn't like people to begin with. Hire better.

Their merchandise and/or service stands apart from the rest. Whether it is the boutique that carries only locally sourced jewelry or the dry cleaner who fixes a zipper you didn't know was broken, your competitors may be doing something you don't. What can you do to top them?

They know how their products are better and can tell their customers in a way that doesn't trip their idiot switch. Commit to retail sales training that covers more than product features.

They have a good website and understand the basic keywords that drive online traffic to their doors. Revamp your website.

They have given up mass couponing and only reward those on their email or other lists. Build your email list to retain those who have already shopped with you.

They try new things. Remember how powerful collaborating with other retailers can be (at the upcoming MMBA Regional Meetings) and never be afraid to try new marketing practices - even if it is something you might not use yourself.

They don't keep comparing themselves to others but hold themselves accountable for their actions, for their choices in products and for the people they employ.

So quit reading this now, hang up the phone or get off Facebook and help the customer in front of you.

Tired of hating your competition?

Then do something about it!

Thoughts on Pricing
Pricing

Determining the proper price for a product is often more than just multiplying cost by a percentage.

Sure, MMBA has some basic mark-up guidelines, but there are many factors in determining which items should be sold at what price and when.

Pricing can be set to maximize profitability for each unit sold or from the market overall.

It can be used to defend an existing market from new entrants, to increase market share within a market or to enter a new market.

Businesses may benefit from lowering or raising prices, depending on the needs and behaviors of customers and clients in the particular market.

While discussing this topic at a recent MMBA board meeting, a director discussed a recent promotion utilizing a concept seen at many convenience stores --- whereby the discount was offered with the purchase of two identical items, but the cost of a single item was more than half the promotional price.

So, a customer could buy two bottles of water for $2.00, but if they only bought one bottle, it would cost $1.39.

This concept is different than a large Twin Cities grocery chain, where two products are priced at a discount, but if only one is purchased, the price is half the promotional price.

So, a customer could buy two packages of cheese for $4.00, but if they only bought one package, it would cost $2.00.

One approach is not necessarily better than the other.

However, it is this type of thought process and consideration that is leading your humble executive director to do an extensive pricing seminar at the 2015 Annual Conference.

Details will become available as they develop.
