As I See It...

This year's Regional Meetings wrapped up last week.

I hope all of you who attended found the information as helpful as I did.

I especially appreciated the exercise on communication styles. It had me thinking about my style and the styles of those I'm with every day.

As we go through our days at work and also at home, we are constantly working with people who have different styles than we do. I

In my mind I know I have given "Bruce" clear directions and full information about the task.

Why is it so hard for him to get the task accomplished and why does he ask so many questions?!?

When I was thinking about the worksheet, I realized Bruce has a different style than I do.

Now it's on my radar to try a different approach with Bruce next time we're going over information or I'm asking him to take on a project.

Hopefully this will result in less frustration for both of us.

If you were not able to attend the meeting, but find yourself having communication challenges with your employees, contact Paul to get a copy of the information. I know you'll find it valuable.

I look forward to future management and leadership topics at Boot Camp and Conferences!

Plastic Bags

Your humble executive director is always learning things.

A member said this week he was watching a television news story and saw a liquor store using plastic carry-out bags.  He asked me if this was a common practice.

I said I didn't know of any facilities that used these bags, but would check.

Much to my surprise, many stores around the state are using them.

Here are some responses:

* We use the plastic bags when customers want an ease of carrying the package from store to car and then into house.  We use paper around bottle then a heavy duty plastic bag for convenience.

* We have used plastic bags designed for wine for the last 2 years. We have two sizes-one for one bottle and one for two bottles. I also use them for our liquor bottles but keep paper for those who want it.

* We use plastic bags and have been for about 8 years. They are stronger and we don't have as much breakage.

* Yes we have for years used plastic bags. They are heavier than what you get at the grocery stores and we have two sizes one fits 750ml - 1.5ltr and one fits 12pk beer.

* We use plastic and paper depending on customer request , we also have re-usable shopping bags with our logo that hold ( 6 ) bottles (most of our wine club members have these through club promotions).

New $100 Bill in Circulation

The new $100 bill is now in circulation.

The $100 bill is the second most common bill in circulation, behind only the $1 bill. It's slightly more common than the $20 bill.

The redesigned $100 note includes two new security features: a blue 3-D security ribbon with images of bells and 100s, and a color-changing bell in an inkwell.

The new features, and additional features retained from the previous design, such as a watermark, offer the public a simple way to visually authenticate the redesigned $100 note.

Consumers worldwide are advised that it is not necessary to trade in older-design $100 notes for new ones. It is U.S. government policy that all designs of U.S. currency remain legal tender, regardless of when they were issued.

Food Drive Stories

The MMBA / Coors Light Food Drive totals are projected to be announced at the end of the month.

Here are a couple of successful ideas from this year's efforts:

* In Pine City, the Voyageur Bottle Shop crew, pictured above, worked an Oktoberfest beer tasting where cash and donations were collected.

* Edina Liquor also did a community paper shredding. In addition to collecting food and cash donations, almost 6000 pounds of paper was shredded.

We would love to hear more stories from around the state.

Plus, if there was ever any question why we do this, the following was printed in the Hackensack newspaper:

The Hackensack Food Shelf is facing shortages locally as well, specifically meat.

In spite of shortages, Westphal's food shelf has been lucky in some respects. The Hackensack Municipal Liquor Store has won a contest by Coors Light Beer for the second time in three years.

In the contest liquor stores compete against one another to see who can raise the most donations of money and food for the needy. And because the Hackensack Municipal Liquor Store raised the most, the Hackensack Food Shelf also wins.

It is using these extra donations so that the food shelf will be able to provide full Thanksgiving dinners for those in need. Providing holiday meals for those in need is a common practice throughout many local food shelves.

We all understand the importance of asking for help, but those who achieve big things are the ones who accept it when it's offered
