Common Core Knowledge

Did You Know ...

... That a New Jersey law passed in 2012 requires parents to call the school when a child will be absent? Tabitha's Law was written after 13-year-old Tabitha Tudor failed to show up at school in Tennessee and her disappearance was not discovered until that evening because the school never called. She remains missing. Please call if your child will be absent! And make sure your numbers are current so that we can reach you in the event of an unexcused absence. Our communication is crucial!

Go, STEAM!

Students in our Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) Course at Harrington Middle School are working with Rowan University professors to asses a web-based edu game they created at Rowan called Sustain City. It teaches students about energy generation and its environmental and economic impacts. Student play a first-person video game where they travel through a city.  At the mayor's, request they visit the nuclear plant, a wind farm, a solar generation plant and a coal-fired plant. They gather information create a report for the mayor on how best to serve the city's needs. Next marking period, students will develop assessments and test the effectiveness of the game.

Prior to the start of the drill, Hartford Principal Steven Bollar outlined practices for the group, which also included officials from the NJDOE School Security Unit, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Antoinette Rath and Board of Education President Margaret Haynes.

Attorney General Visits Hartford School
Hartford School was honored by a visit from New Jersey Attorney General John Jay Hoffman and New Jersey Director of Homeland Security Edward Dickson on September 18. They came, along with a contingent of staff and colleagues, as part of an unannounced visit by the New Jersey Department of Education and Homeland Security to assess our school safety and planning efforts.Throughout the state, members of the Department of Education's School Preparedness team routinely conduct unannounced visits to monitor school drilling procedures.

Students were simply advised that the school was being placed in lockdown, which is one of the standard drills we have already practiced this year. Monitoring team members conducted a walkthrough assessment to assure that all students and staff were safely locked in classroom or other spaces. All of those involved in conducting the drill then convened to "de-brief" and discuss findings and recommendations.

Harrington STEM Wins State Award
Harrington Middle School's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Program has received the Recognized Program designation in the 27th Annual School Leader Award Program.

Sponsored by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the annual competition honors noteworthy programs across the state. This year, judges selected four school district programs for recognition from a field of many. The STEM Program taught by Harrington Teacher Maureen Barrett, introduces students to technology, engineering and design in a hands-on curriculum.

Teams of students collaborate to build a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) that can be used to conduct underwater research. The ROV's are tested in a classroom pool and a club at Harrington related to the program competes at various levels outside of school.

Public Ed Fund Donates $30,000
Trustees of the Mount Laurel Public Education Fund Inc. donated $30,000 to the district at the August Board of Education meeting. The funds represented proceeds from the "18th Annual Driving To The Green Golf Tournament" held last October.

The Mount Laurel Education Fund, Inc. is an independent non-profit corporation formed in 1994 to broaden support for quality education in the Mount Laurel Public Schools. Proceeds from the tournament have contributed more than $720,000 over the past nineteen years to the Mount Laurel Schools.

In the 2013-2014 school year, the Public Education Fund contributions will sustain tutoring grants for students, as well as project grants for staff. The majority of the funds raised will continue to be dedicated to retention of after-school clubs and related activities.

We Keep Hearing About Common Core
Mount Laurel Schools participate in the Common Core State Standards, along with other New Jersey Schools. New Jersey is one of 45 states across the country now taking part in this important initiative.

Educational standards help teachers ensure their students have the skills and knowledge they need to be successful by providing clear goals for student learning.
