Episcopal Welcome

Sixth Sunday after Pentecost

"We invite everyone to share communion around God's altar.

We strive to be a welcoming and relevant Christian community doing what matters though prayer, worship, teaching, outreach, fellowship, and service.

We will demonstrate the real life application of scripture, tradition and reason by providing a safe place to respond to each other's needs, hurts, joys and interests."

Greetings!

Welcome to the latest edition of our  e-newsletter.

Wherever you are on your faith journey may you discover God's spirit here at Resurrection. May you experience God's love and feel God's blessing as you participate in the life of the parish.

We will see you in church!

If you or someone you know is in need of pastoral care, please contact the parish office, a member of the clergy, or a member of the vestry.  Please do not hesitate to let us know of any needs that arise.

THIS SUNDAY, June 30th @ 9:30

Do you lack the confidence to have a discussion about sexuality because you lack a biblical understanding on the subject? Do you think you know what the Bible teaches about sexuality?

This Sunday the 30th, Father Scott will lead a presentation and discussion about what the Bible really says about sexuality. Please join us for an adult conversation about a topic that is so important to the church today.

CHILDCARE WILL BE AVAILABLE
Resurrection began hosting Family Promise last Sunday. The program is running very smoothly thanks to the wonderful volunteer support of so many people at Resurrection. One family is a single father with three children, and the second family is a single mother with four children. In the picture below, the program coordinators get ready to receive our guests.

Please contact Cathy Parrish cdparrish@windstream.net to volunteer to help.

Resurrection Peace Buses Roll!
Teens From Jerusalem Arrive Monday

Next week, Kids4Peace summer camp starts and Resurrection is providing our bus and van, along with drivers, to move the kids to various events over the next two weeks as they attend Camp Mikell in Toccoa and the Atlanta area.

Kids4Peace is a global movement of interfaith people from Israel, Palestine and the USA who believe that together, peace is possible. Beginning at the age of twelve, Jewish, Christian and Muslim youth meet for after-school activities, weekend events, and summer camps.

Through a six-year program of learning and dialogue, they form lasting friendships across the lines of conflict and join a community of peacemakers from around the world. Founded on the conviction that peace will come through interfaith understanding and tolerance, Kids4Peace is nonpolitical, nonsectarian, and nonpartisan.

Our Parish is supporting the Camp Efforts this summer by providing transportation and volunteers.

Resurrection to Receive Scout Troop
Over Scouting Policy Change

In late May, the Boy Scouts of America National Council approved a resolution to remove the restriction denying membership to youth on the basis of sexual orientation alone. As a result, many churches are deciding to end their support of scouting and asking scout troop to leave.

Since that decision, Atlanta area television and radio stations have been reporting about scout troops being displaced by various churches. After watching this happen, I believe that seeing long-term Scout troops losing their home base over the issue of gay members is sad and troubling, especially since we know scouting to have so much to offer young people in the way of positive character formation.

I contacted the Boy Scout representative of the Northeast Georgia region and offered Resurrection as a home for any troop that might be displaced over the recent issue in White County. The representative came to meet with me at Resurrection the very next day and explained that one is being displaced in our area. We agreed that the troop will be placed at Resurrection.

I then polled the vestry who unanimously agreed to extend the invitation. I then asked the men's group to be the primary sponsor and source of support for the troop. I invited the scout master to the men's breakfast last Saturday and both parties agreed it will be a mutually beneficial relationship.

I would  like to emphasize that although I find it very sad that churches are displacing troops, I do not want to criticize other churches over issues they are struggling with. For Resurrection it is not a struggle, and we are happy to provide loving hospitality in the name of our Lord Jesus.

Please lovingly welcome our new troop!

Peace,
Father Scott

Being Dead is No Excuse:
The Official Southern Ladies Guide to Hsting the Perfect Funeral
by Gayden Metcalfe & Charlotte Hayes

"Being Dead is No Excuse" is sure to have Southern hostesses nodding their perfectly coiffed heads in unison." "USA TODAY

Folks in the Delta have a strong sense of community, and being dead is no impediment to belonging to it. Down South, they don't forget you when you've up and died, in fact they visit you more often. But there are quintessencyial rules and rituals for kicking the bucket tastefully. Having a flawless funeral is one of them.

In this deliciously entertaining slice of Southern life [and death}, inveterate hostess Gayden Metcalfe explains everything you need to know to host an authentic Southern funeral. Can you be properly buried without tomato aspic? Who prepares tastier funeral fare, the Episcopal ladies or the Methodist ladies? And what does one do when a family gets three sheets to the wind and eats the entire feast the night before a funeral?

Each chapter includes a delicious, tried and true Southern recipe, critical if you plan to die tastefully any time soon. Pickled Shrimp, Aunt Hebe's Coconut Cake, and the ubiquitous Bing Cherry Salad with Coca-Cola and among the many dishes guaranteed to make the next funeral the most satisfying one yet. Even if you never get south of Rochester, this book will charm, it will entertain, and it will give you all the ingredients required for the perfect Southern send off.

I loved reading this book. The funniest part is I have known some women like this in my life. I must state having been raised Methodist; I must admit that Episcopalians have the best funeral food. This is a good, fun read.
