Beloved community,

On October 11, 1987, over half a million people gathered for the March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Not long after this experience, two prominent activists, Rob Eichberg and Jean O'Leary, responded to the extreme negativity against lesbian and gay people by advocating that our communities needed a day to celebrate and honor the importance of coming out. Since then, LGBTQ people have celebrated National Coming Out Day on October 11th each year.

Even all these years later, for those of us who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, and/or transgender, it seems our coming out is never really complete. When we look around to see if it is safe to hold the hand of our beloved in public, we come out. When we go to the grocery store with our significant other, we come out. When we are honest with our doctor about our bodies and our sexualities, we come out. We experience multiple coming outs every day, and with each coming out we risk rejection. It is easy to grow weary along the way.

Even though the cultural landscape has changed since that March on Washington in 1987,we know there is more work to do. But on October 11th, let's pause to celebrate the victory of coming out. Let's celebrate each other: gay, lesbian bisexual and straight, let's celebrate. Transgender or not trans, let's celebrate. Let us celebrate that we have survived. Let us grieve for those we have lost along the way. And, most importantly, let's take this day to refuel for the journey, because on October 12th we will wake up and still have to come out again.

With love,
Rev. Jakob

Conference Fund Collection To Be Used For 2016 General Conference Expenses
We have only 9 months left to prepare for General Conference expenses for our future pastor and lay delegates. To date we have covered the Conference registration cost, but need to work on rooms and flights.  We estimate this cost to be around $6000. Please help as much as you can. This collection will be taken up on the last Sunday of each month. Because these funds are designated expressly for the Conference, the church does not have to pay tithes on them to the denomination. So, please bring a little more to church on the last Sunday of each month so that our Lay Delegates and Pastor will be ready to represent us next July 2016. Thank you!
