IP3 AWARDS
COMPTEL CEO Wins Public Knowledge IP3 Award
On September 24, Public Knowledge honored COMPTEL CEO Chip Pickering with an IP3 Award, which honors those who have made significant contributions in the three areas of IP: Intellectual Property, Information Policy and Internet Protocol.

"Chip is a true champion of competition," said Gene Kimmelman, CEO of Public Knowledge. "This year alone, Chip has successfully led efforts to preserve the Open Internet, defeat the Comcast-Time Warner Cable merger, and lead the tech transitions effort to extend bipartisan competition policy to future networks."

FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, who delivered remarks at the award ceremony said, "I had the great honor of knowing Chip when he was a member of Congress, to be able to work with him then and to have watched as he has built COMPTEL into an organization that goes back to this concept of 'ambition must be made to counteract ambition.' But a core of businesspeople, who share the principles and the concepts...yes, for a 'for profit' motive, nothing wrong with that...who share the concepts and motives that I think we share here in terms of the importance of good telecommunications policy to the American people and the American economy."

As a former Republican Member of Congress, Pickering authored the first bill in Congress calling for protection of an Open Internet. Since taking over as CEO of COMPTEL 18 months ago, he has united competitive providers across all platforms - wireline, wireless, Internet, and streaming video. By doing so, Pickering has grown the association to include companies like Netflix, Amazon, Google Fiber, Twitter, Level 3, XO, Cogent and T-Mobile.

Past winners of the IP3 Award include Tim Berners Lee, Rep. Anna Eshoo and Rep. Darrell Issa.

COMPTEL Leads Open Internet Brief Filed i
Support of Federal Communications Commission

On September 21, COMPTEL, three of its member companies - Netflix, Cogent and Level 3 - and a number of consumer organizations, including Public Knowledge and Free Press, filed an intervenors' brief in support of the FCC's Open Internet Order.

"The FCC's Order provides a balanced, light-touch framework for preserving the Open Internet relied upon by hundreds of millions of Americans. The FCC's action protects both innovators and investors. It promotes both streamers and dreamers, providing the certainty needed for continued growth," said COMPTEL CEO Chip Pickering. "Contrary to claims that the sky would fall, Open Internet protections have proven to be a free market driver. The FCC and the Intervenors have made a strong showing in their respective briefs that the Court should affirm the Order on all counts."

Join Hogan Lovells for a Lunch and Learn on Connecting the Internet of Things
On Monday, October 19 at COMPTEL PLUS, Hogan Lovells will host a Lunch and Learn entitled "Making the Market: Connecting the Internet of Things (IoT) that will examine the "back end" of the IoT and discuss what is needed to support the growth and management of this global explosion of new devices and sensors.

It is estimated that by the year 2020, there may be as many as 50 billion "things" connected to the Internet. Whether it's technology for the home, manufacturing, transportation, or any other sector of the economy, the effects of the IoT will be far reaching. As more "things" become available and integrated into the daily routines of homes and businesses, the increased need for connectivity and software platforms to manage the tremendous amounts of data that will be created by IoT will drive network strategies in the wired and wireless industries.

The panel will be moderated by Trey Hanbury, partner at Hogan Lovells, and feature panelists Bruce Gustafson, vice president of Government & Industry Affairs, North America for Ericsson; Ghita Harris-Newton, global head of Legal Privacy & Assistant General Counsel for Yahoo; and Jason Sommerset, senior director, Product for Bandwidth.
