Congress Proposes Open Internet Legislation
Hearings Scheduled for January 21
Last week Congressional leaders unveiled draft legislation designed to "provide clear rules of the road for open and unfettered access to the Internet." According to the committees' press release, "the draft legislation guarantees that Internet users will continue to be the decision makers for the content they want, while ensuring that innovation and investment continue to fuel the robust future of the Internet. Most importantly, this legislation avoids lengthy court battles that would surely come from the FCC's proposed action, bringing certainty to consumers and job creators alike for years to come."

This topic also will be the focus of hearings on January 21. The House Energy & Commerce Committee hearing, scheduled for 10 a.m. in 2123 Rayburn will feature witnesses from Amazon.com, CTIA, Etsy, Minority Media & Telecom Council, National Cable & Telecommunications Association, and National Hispanic Media Coalition. The Senate Commerce, Science & Transportation Committee then will host a hearing at 2:30 p.m., featuring witnesses from Amazon.com, CTIA, Hudson Institute, Midcontinent Communications, Minority Media & Telecommunications Council and Public Knowledge.

"COMPTEL supports a strong open Internet policy, and we welcome the principles now articulated by Chairmen Upton and Thune," said COMPTEL CEO Chip Pickering. "At the FCC, there is a growing chorus of support for taking a proven light-touch policy approach to protect and promote the open Internet. This approach has worked successfully in the wireless market and offers a strong foundation for ensuring future investment and innovation in the Internet, as well. We will continue to work with both Congress and the FCC to promote and protect an open and competitive Internet that benefits consumers."
