On October 23, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology hosted a hearing on "The Evolution of Wired Communications Networks." 
 
Testifying on behalf of COMPTEL was Mark Iannuzzi, president of TelNet Worldwide. Other witnesses include Jim Cicconni, senior executive vice president-External and Legislative Affairs for AT&T; Randy May, president of Free State Foundation; John Burke of the Vermont Public Service Board (PSB) representing NARUC; and Harold Feld, senior vice president of Public Knowledge.

COMPTEL to Host Members Only Call on November 7 about FCC Mandatory Special Access Data Collection

COMPTEL invites its members to take part in a conference call on Thursday, November 7 at 11 a.m. to explore the specifics of the FCC's mandatory special access data collection. Discussion leaders Rochelle Jones of tw telecom inc. and Nirali Patel of Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP will walk participants through the information request and take questions.

NLAD to Begin Accepting Information in December

The FCC's Wireline Competition Bureau released a public notice last week informing eligible telecommunications carriers (ETCs) receiving Lifeline support that the National Lifeline Accountability 

Database (NLAD) will be ready to accept subscriber information by December 2013. Beginning at that time, 
ETCs must provide information for existing subscribers to the NLAD by state, pursuant to a state schedule that will be issued by USAC, and for new subscribers upon initiation of service. For more information, visit the FCC website.
 
FCC Announces Tentative November Agenda  
The FCC's next open meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 14 at 10:30 a.m. Items on the tentative agenda include: 
  • Foreign Investment in Broadcast Licensees 
  • Improving 911 Reliability
  • Status of Universal Service Reform Implementation
  • Promoting Digital Literacy though Public-Private Partnerships
The meeting will take place in Room TW-C305 at FCC headquarters, and will be shown live at FCC.gov/live.

Senate Subcommittee to Host Hearing on Broadband

On Tuesday, October 29 at 10:30 a.m., the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation's Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet will host a hearing on "Broadband Adoption: The Next Mile." The Subcommittee will examine how to increase broadband adoption in the United States; explore challenges to broadband adoption among various demographic groups and regions; and strategies to overcome those barriers.   

  

Witnesses include Aaron Smith, senior researcher, Pew Research Center; David L. Cohen, executive vice president, Comcast Corporation; Bernadine Joselyn, director of Public Policy and Engagement for the Blandin Foundation; Sunne Wright McPeak, president and CEO, California Emerging Technology Fund; and the Honorable John Sununu, honorary co-chair Broadband for America.
 
The hearing will take place in Russell Senate Office Building - 253. A live webcast will be available on the Senate Commerce Committee website
