Fri, Dec 4, 8-10 AM, PE Classroom
The PTSA Parent Networks invite all grades to meet with Principal Herrmann, rescheduled to Friday, December 4, from 8-10 AM in the PE classroom (located on the N-building side, which is on the left as you face the entrance of Bow Gym). We will be joined at 8:30 AM by Dr. Herrmann and some of her staff. Please RSVP here (again) so we have enough coffee and remember to pick up a parking pass from the office. If you have comments and questions in advance of the meeting and during the year, here is a simple online Gunn Parent Feedback Form. PTSA will compile your submissions and pass them along to administration. Feedback can be anonymous, but should be constructive. Positive comments are welcome too.
On Tuesday, November 3, Pedaling for Prizes volunteers gave out treats to 770 Gunn bike commuters. Lucky students who pulled purple wrapped treats from the grab bags got additional prizes, including: bike headlight/reflector sets, CineMark movie tickets, Peet's gift cards, "I Bike Palo Alto" t-shirts. Thanks to volunteers: Linda Baker, Sonya Bradski, Julie Dubrouillet, Penny Ellson, Jeff Greenfield, Marilyn Keller, Jim Pflasterer, Stefan Rosner, Jessica Rothberg, Jim Silver, Nancy Smith. Thank you, Gunn bicyclists, for choosing active, healthy, and sustainable commutes that help to reduce auto congestion and emissions. Ride on!
Be Safe. Be Seen. Use Bike Lights for Riding After Dark.
With shorter days, students are commuting at dusk or in the dark. Bicycle lights and reflectors are required by law at this time of day. A handlebar headlight makes a bicycle visible to others and illuminates the road so the rider can see. Higher-powered headlights do a better job, though they tend to be a little more expensive. Tail lights and reflectors should be mounted on something stable where they won't be obscured by bags, panniers or other gear on the bike. Lights are vastly superior to reflectors, so a red light on the rear is recommended for maximum visibility. For safe school commute information, visit saferoutes.paloaltopta.org/index.shtml.
Glare from Winter Sun Can Reduce Visibility. Be Aware.
The winter sun's lower position in the morning sky can sometimes momentarily blind a driver's view, so be aware of your surroundings for a safe commute to school.
- Drivers, please slow down and look for pedestrians and bicyclists. The law requires you to drive at a safe speed for the conditions (which include glare).
- Students, keep to the right and be aware. If the sun is in your eyes then it is also in a driver's eyes behind you! And even if the sun is at your back, it can blind drivers coming towards you, so always be aware and never assume they see you.
FROM THE PREVIOUS ISSUE:
Attention Gunn Commuters Who Use East Meadow @ Cowper Intersection
The City of Palo Alto has just reprogrammed the signal at the East Meadow Dr. @ Cowper St. intersection. The walk phase across East Meadow Drive will now begin three seconds before the green phase in order to allow pedestrians and cyclists to establish themselves in the intersection before motor vehicles are allowed to proceed. This timing plan will run all day long. City staff invites your comments on this change or other road conditions. Please submit comments via smartphone or web, using PaloAlto311 here.
