Gunn School BBQ

PTSA and PAUSD Food Services are hosting a school-wide BBQ for all Gunn students and staff on September 4th. We need parents between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM to help set up, prep food, grill, serve, and clean up our Back to School BBQ for students. Please sign up here.

Gunn PTSA General Meeting

Our first PTSA General Meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 10, in the Gunn Staff Lounge. We will have an Executive Board meeting at 8:30 AM, followed by the General meeting at 9:00 AM. We will discuss and vote on the proposed budget for the 2015-2016 school year. The budget and the agenda are posted on the bulletin board outside of the Gunn office. All PTSA meetings are open.

Gizdich Pie Fundraiser
Now til Oct 15
Support the Class of 2016 by purchasing delicious Gizdich Ranch Pies. The pies are made from local crops in Gizdich Ranch's own Watsonville farm kitchen and come to us frozen, complete with easy baking directions. Five varieties to choose from: Traditional Apple, Dutch Apple, Two Berry, Pumpkin and Apricot. Both the Dutch Apple and the Pumpkin pies are vegetarian (though not vegan). All proceeds benefit the Class of 2016 graduation activities. Call for Physics Tutors - ALL Levels! Conceptual Physics, Physics, Physics H and AP Physics C tutors needed. Gunn students or parents who can tutor Conceptual Physics, Physics, Physics H and AP Physics C, come into the Gunn Academic Center and sign up now. Accepting applications now. We have Physics students waiting for you! Need a Tutor? The AC is taking applications to get a tutor. Come sign up and we'll find you a match! Field Trip Driver Essential Insurance Coverage
Parents who drive for sports and other field trips must complete a special driver form and have it approved and signed by the principal BEFORE the trip. This form must be accompanied by: 1) a copy of the driver's license AND, 2) a copy of the declaration page of the driver's insurance policy showing AMOUNTS of coverage. The district requires minimum coverage of $300,000 bodily injury per occurrence and $100,000 property damage per occurrence. (Forms received often have no declaration page attached or show inadequate property damage coverage. Cost of raising coverage is minimal.) EACH driver must complete a new form each school year, which will cover all field trips for the present school year. Questions: nhesterman@pausd.org

Needs of Home Economics Classes
The Interiors classes need interior magazines and samples of fabric, tile and wood. The Foods classes need recyclable type plastic food containers. One cup, two cup and quart sizes are most useful. Identified materials may be left in the main office or taken to K-5. Questions: cpeters@pausd.org or nhesterman@pausd.org.

PiE $500K Back-to-School Challenge Grant
Now til Sep 5
PiE (Palo Alto Partners in Education) has launched its 2015-2016 fundraising campaign for PAUSD schools, and we need the support of our whole community. PiE funds over 250 caring adults at all PAUSD schools - from classroom aides, to elective class teachers, to caring counselors and mentors. PiE-funded staff make a difference for our Gunn students every day. We are currently in the final week of our $500,000 Back-to-School Challenge Grant. Every dollar donated to PiE between now and September 5th will be matched (up to $500K). Please join us and donate today! Together we strengthen our schools. Click here to donate online.

Palo Alto CAC Family Ice Cream Social

Socialize with other families and meet the Director of Special Education and our District Superintendent. There will be food and drinks and ice cream! All families with children/teens with an IEP or 504 are welcome to attend.

Palo Alto Art Center Fall Registration for Children and Adults
Registration for fall classes began on Aug 21 for residents, and begins Aug 28 for non-residents. Adults can choose from a variety of ceramics courses, as well as classes in drawing, painting, jewelry fabrication and photography. Children and teens can experience classes in ceramics, painting, drawing, stop-motion animation, and photography. We will also offer a Creative Mapping class that ties in with our fall exhibition, Front Yard/Backstreet. Check out our Fall catalogue to get all the details on our upcoming classes and workshops.

Volunteering Opportunity at Foundation for a College Education's STEAM Middle School Program
Tuesdays and/or Thursdays, during school year, 3:30-6:00 PM 
STEAM is looking for Volunteer Tutors to work with middle school students from East Palo Alto on homework assignments and enrichment projects. This is a great opportunity to build your network, serve your community, and positively affect the learning experiences of our middle school students. Silicon Valley Boychoir Auditions

The Silicon Valley Boychoir (based in Palo Alto) is holding auditions for the 2015-2016 season by appointment on Friday, August 28. Beginning levels are open to boys second grade and older. High school and middle school boys with experience may audition for upper levels. YCS Leadership Fellows

Join YCS Leadership Fellows and become leaders through service with our afterschool program for high school students. Students will lead community events, research community needs, and respond with a service project that they create together. This is a great opportunity to meet people who share a passion for community involvement, have a positive impact, and make your voice heard while having an awesome time! The Parent Project: Proven Methods for Raising and Protecting Teens
Thursdays, Sep 3-Nov 19, 6-9 PM
For parents to improve their teen's social and academic engagement, discipline, and any aspect of the relationship. Parents will learn to stop arguing, control the use of electronics, improve school attendance and performance, prevent the use of drugs and alcohol, bad peer influence and run-aways; as well as to strengthen family unity and self-esteem. Childcare included for ages 3-15. Gunn BEAM (Business, Entrepreneurship and Math Program)

Gunn BEAM is created through a unique public-private partnership. Westly Foundation Prize for Young Innovators Solving Community Problems

The Westly Foundation is offering $20,000 prizes to innovators under age 29 with novel solutions to community problems. Applications are due on September 15th for the  Westly Prize for Young Innovators of California. The Prize rewards committed and creative doers making the world a better place. Palo Alto CAC Discussion List
This on-line group is a place where PAUSD parents can learn about Special Education events and resources in our community. It's also a forum for discussing issues with other PAUSD parents that arise in our children's schooling and life in general.   • The Gunn Connection is published ONCE a week, every Friday. Deadline is noon the day before publication.
  • Please submit ANNOUNCEMENTS ONLY to the Gunn Connection at gunnconnection@paloaltopta.org. Only announcements specific to the Gunn community will be published. Any other announcements from outside the Gunn community must first be submitted for review to the PTA eNews (enews@paloaltopta.org), which will then distribute it to the relevant schools in the district.
  • Announcements will be limited to 100 words or less. Any lengthier or more in-depth articles or news should be submitted to the Gunn Connection Extra (GunnNews@gmail.com).
  • Announcements will be published in two consecutive issues. To have further announcements made after that, please submit your announcement again.
  • Please use the words "Gunn Connection" in the subject line. Items should include a title, the date, time and location of the event, and a brief (100 words or less) description of the activity. List email, contact information and web links at the end. Content should be in the body of your email as unformatted text. Attachments subject to approval by the editors.
