Shabbat Shalom D'var Torah
by  Rabbi Avrohom Drandoff, Judaic Studies Principal

The Talmud in Sotah states that although the bearers of the holy Ark held the staves on their shoulders and seemed to be carrying it, in reality the Ark was carrying them. The Talmud is teaching us that the Ark which represents the Torah will provide support for those who support it just like the Ark supported those who carried it. Additionally, the Torah states that the staves of the Ark shall remain and never be removed even when the Ark is not being transported.

The Meshech Chachma explains that this symbolizes the connection between those who study Torah and those who financially support Torah study. They are considered as one unit who provide support and sustainability to one another. From these two thoughts about the Ark we see the benefits of supporting Jewish Day Schools. Not only is the donor benefiting the school by providing them with the necessary resources to further the education of their students, the Torah is telling us that
the donor is contributing to the very foundation of Jewish education and their generosity will further our community for generations.
