College Avenue Commons Rising at Block 12

Construction is underway at Downtown Tempe's newest development, the College Avenue Commons at the Tempe Campus. This ASU development project will see the creation of a new 137,000 multi-purpose facility located at the corner of College Avenue and 7th Street which will house a new 2-story bookstore, offices, retail, classroom space and more. The building will create another connection between the university and Mill Avenue, helping to join student life with the activity of Tempe's main street.

The first and second levels of College Avenue Commons will be
for commercial uses, including an ASU student bookstore. Known as the Sun Devil Marketplace, these levels will also include ASU merchandise, food, and a technology store.

The top three floors will be a combination of classroom and office spaces. Specifically, the Del E. Webb School of Construction, the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment, as well as the Office of Global Outreach and Extended Education will all be housed in the facility.

Additionally, visiting potential students and their families will begin orientation at the College Avenue Commons. The ASU Campus Visit Experience and Visitor's Center will be the launching point for all campus tours and will also include a community room and 200 seat auditorium which will also be for community activities and events.

Finally, the College Avenue Commons will be a L.E.E.D. Certified project. Plans for the building include the use of sustainable practices including reduced water usage, recycled and reusable materials, external heat reduction skin and shading.

The development fills a vacant area of land located along College Avenue and joins the Hub on Campus as recent projects that will bring additional residents and pedestrians to the area. With activation of the space including retail use, shaded walking areas, and planned activities, the College Avenue Commons will work as connector between the northern end of the ASU campus to the bustling street life of Mill Avenue. ASU plans to complete the development in the Summer of 2014.

Cactus Sports Expands to New Location

Going into their 22nd year of business, Cactus Sports has expanded to a second location. Taking over an 1,800 sq. ft. storefront on Mill Avenue, the teamwear store has more than doubled the amount of space from their previous location and updated their look.

The renovations for the new space move away from the traditional slat walls and corporate retail fixtures they had used previously, and incorporate fixtures made with reclaimed barn wood, old doors and windows, and antiques. The hanging system for clothing on walls uses metal plumbing pipe. Rather than the first location's feel of a sports retail fan shop, this new location gives the store a rustic boutique feel.

With the size increase, Cactus Sports can increase inventory resulting in a larger selection of merchandise, while giving customers extra room to maneuver during the busy sales periods.
