Youth spotlight:  Kacey!
From lost to empowerment
Kacey, youth story
When I was about 11 I can remember realizing I was gay, I met a girl who I fell for. After that summer I was forced into an environment where it wasn't safe for me to be out and proud about who I am, especially since I didn't really know then.

Kacey was also one of the youth who gave Rep. Jeff Thompson a tour of IYG...see below.

Rep Jeff Thompson visits IYG!!
Conservative State Representative comes to see what it's all about!
Rep Thompson speaking

Last month Rep. Jeff Thompson came to IYG, received a tour of the activity center by three members of youth council and then spent about an hour talking to them and asking quesitons about IYG's programming.

As a former teacher, Rep Thompson was interested in getting the facts about IYG instead of reading the information on the IYG website.  He was relieved to discover that very young youth were not involved in safe sex practice discussions and that abstenince was always an option that was discussed.

Rep Thompson proposed an amendment to legislation concerning the specialty license plate program.  For a copy of this amendment, click HERE.

IYG receives
Friend of Youth Award

Graham with ISCA award
The Indiana School Counselor's Association gave their annual Friend of Youth Award for 2012 to IYG due largely to the statewide work that Graham Brinklow, IYG's Education Outreach Coordinator has accomplished with high school GSAs.  Graham accepted the award at the ISCA's annual conference in November.

Interesting fact... it was only 10 years ago that IYG was not allowed to staff a table at the state PTA conference and now the ISCA is giving IYG an award!

IYG's 25th anniversary celebration a success!

Betty Wilson, award winner Not only were over 180 people there, including 30 IYG youth, and not only did Kent Smith (below) and Betty Wilson (right) received awards for theirKent Smith, award winner involvement and support for IYG,  and not only did everyone have a great time...but  IYG made over $6,000!!!

IYG's outcomes are impressive

Starting last November, the youth attending IYG programming at the activity center have taken an evaluation survey every 6 months.  Check out some of these preliminary statistics between the first and second time the youth took the survey:

Excelling in school increased from 31% to 44%.

Felt depressed often decreased from 50% to 19%.

Frequent thoughts of suicide decreased from 31% to 13%

Liking to loving who they are increased from 75% to 87%

Why they come to IYG?

To go to groups increased from 38% to 63%.

To find someone to date decreased from 31% to 6%

More statistics to come!
