FIVE SYSO MUSICIANS ACCEPTED TO
FIRST-EVER NATIONAL YOUTH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
Five out of six Washington State students accepted are SYSO musicians
Seattle, WA - Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras (SYSO) congratulates the five exceptional young musicians from its orchestral training program who have won entrance into the first-ever National Youth Symphony Orchestra of the United States of America (NYO-USA).
Carnegie Hall, which has developed this new venture, announced Monday the names of the 120 exceptional young musicians from 42 states who have been recognized as being among the finest in the country following a comprehensive audition process. These youth musicians will come together from June 30 through July 23, 2013 to first participate in an intensive two-week training and then embark on an international tour with stops at Washington DC's Kennedy Center, Moscow, St. Petersburg, and London. Internationally-renowned conductor Valery Gergiev will lead the NYO-USA, joined this summer by acclaimed violinist Joshua Bell as soloist. The orchestra's concert program will include Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, Shostakovich's Symphony No. 10 in E Minor, and a new work by young American composer Sean Shepherd, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall especially for NYO-USA.
Each of the five accepted SYSO musicians have been involved in more than one of SYSO's multiple orchestral education programs - either in Academic Year Orchestra, a SYSO Summer Festival Orchestra, or in the SYSO in the Schools program. All of these performers are currently members of Youth Symphony, SYSO's top-tier orchestra and they include:
Bass player Will Langlie-Miletich has been with SYSO for three years, and participated in the Marrowstone Music Festival in 2011. He also received support from SYSO's Endangered Instrument Program, which provides free coaches to public school music students learning to play a lesson-commonly played instrument. Will is currently a 10th grader at Roosevelt High School.
Violinist Joseph Lorang has been in SYSO for 7 years. He attended both the Marrowstone-in-the-City (MITC) summer camp and the Marrowstone Music Festival in 2010 & 2011. Joseph is an 11th grader at Lakeside Upper School.
Violinist Mariane Martinoli has been in SYSO for 6 years. She is currently homeschooled at the 10th grade level. She attended MITC four times and attended Marrowstone in 2011.
Percussionist Karl Ronneburg has been in SYSO for 5 years. He attended MITC and has attended the Marrowstone Music Festival for the past 4 years (2009-2012).He is in the 12th grade at Redmond High School.
Violinist Sophia Stoyanovich has been in SYSO for 9 years and also attended MITC. She is the winner of the 2012 SYSO Concerto Competition and was the soloist at this season's November 2012 concert. She is an 11th grade at Bainbridge High School.
Having Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestras so well represented in the contingent of musicians from Washington State is a testament to the legacy of artistic excellence and education that SYSO has provided for the last 70 years.
SYSO Executive Director Daniel Petersen reacts to this exciting news: "We are so proud of these students and know how hard each one has worked to perfect their musicianship. Each young musician is a great representative of the musical ecosystem of Washington State. We are glad that SYSO could be the keystone to their music education and a sustained musical learning experience across their multiple years of involvement in our programs. This honor for our students is especially poignant as next month we celebrate our 70th Anniversary at a Gala Concert where all levels of SYSO musicians will perform."
An opportunity to celebrate the Seattle Youth Symphony and hear all the talented young musicians in their orchestras will happen on Sunday, On April 28 at a gala concert at 3 p.m. in Benaroya Hall. The program showcases the full breadth of the Youth Symphony training program - from musicians as young as 7 years old to college-level performers. Guest appearances by distinguished alumni, and video vignettes from the organization's storied past will accompany the orchestral performances.
