12th Avenue Arts to launch monthly happy hour

Dear friends,

Transit-oriented development is a key element in building vibrant and engaged communities and in meeting Mayor Murray's plan to add 50,000 units of housing in the next 10 years. We will build affordable housing at the new Capitol Hill light rail station, with our partners at Gerding Edlen and longtime friends at Schemata Workshop. The building will include about 90 affordable apartments, a child care center and community space at the epicenter of Capitol Hill. The overall development at the station will include over 400 apartments with retail space, a plaza, a permanent home for the farmer's market and more. It will be the "downtown" of our community and is at the heart of the Capitol Hill EcoDistrict. The citizens of this community, in collaboration with CHH, the Community Council and the Chamber, fought hard for this smart plan to bring density to an urban, transit-oriented neighborhood.

Capitol Hill Housing is honored to be the affordable housing developer. Having served this community for 40 years, through preservation and award-winning developments, we are delighted to be building more housing in the community that is at the very roots of our existence. Our goal is to move this project forward as quickly as possible. The need for more affordable housing throughout the city is great and we must keep searching for more solutions.

Haines Grand Re-opening

On June 30, we held a renovation celebration at the Haines Apartments on Capitol Hill. This classic brick building offers 30 affordable studios and one-bedroom apartments to low-income seniors and people with disabilities.

Capitol Hill Housing purchased the Haines in 2012 to prevent it from being converted into market-rate apartments. We recently finished renovations, including updated kitchens, heating and lighting, a new roof and improvements to common areas. The building's residents are happy to be able to call the Haines home.
Legislative Wrap-up

Lawmakers in Olympia passed a capital budget that includes $75 million for the Housing Trust Fund, as well as other funding sources for transit-oriented development and services for residents. The Trust Fund will create nearly 2,000 new affordable homes in Washington. Thank you to all of our champions in the legislature who have continued to support housing for all.

However, to solve the affordability crisis, we will need more flexible funding to develop housing at all affordability levels. Learn more at the Washington Low Income Housing Alliance.
